Yesterday the radiator on my P38 (2.5 DSE) went bang. When we opened the hood we couldn't believe what we saw. The black plastic top section of the rad had just split wide open along it's whole length.

There was no prior warning, the water was topped up the day before so it wasn't a case of lack of the wet stuff. The temp indicator was showing it's normal temp (just around the half way mark). There was no excessive load going onto the engine (normal driving conditions, around 19ºC ext temp), the air-con was not on.

Anyone got any idea what could have caused this to happen?

Has anyone had the same happen to them?

As the part that has split is, as I said, the black plastic
top part of the rad and after taking a good look at it looks as if it's just clamped onto the main rad body, I was wondering if that can be bought on it's own or is it going to be a case of having to buy a complete rad?

Any help would be grateful,

Phil

Sounds like the demise of a head gasket to me... the pressure in the cylinders went straight through the cooling system & the weakest thing went... the top of the rad in your case.

It's not the head gasket. What it looks like is that when one of the guys at the garage was fitting a new belt, he use a sort of crow-bar to un-arm the tennsionor. The problems seems to be that to gain some sort of leverage he rested the crow-bar accross the top of the rad and rad grill. This seems to have caused a small fracture on the inside of the rads plastic top. With that done it was only a matter of time till it went bang.

I could call you lucky or unlucky with the final outcome... you pick :D
