I wouldn't advise trying to do the rad without removing the coupling. The "proper" spanner is less than a tenner on evil bay - or just make one out of some 4mm plate.

Or post your location in your profile, and a kind fellow member near you might lend you the spanner for the 3 secs it takes to undo the thing!!
 
Cheers James, I actually think that the leak is from the filler plug, as I have just had the clutch changed and they drained the system, I understand that these plastic plugs can be troublesome.
Is the fan left hand thread, that is undo clock wise ?

did they pull engine out to change the clutch, anticlockwise to unscrew
