Radiator fan specification?

Hi all,

I'm looking to replace my standard fan on my def 90 2.5 petrol with an electric fan.

I can't seem to find anywhere what the air flow is on the standard fan? I have seen some fans on ebay but just want to compare air flow so I ensure I get enough cooling?

Any help greatly appreciated.

You'll never match the airflow of the viscous with a normally-available electric fan. They shift a seriously huge amount of air.

However, this shouldn't cause an issue as the engines in Land Rovers are rather over-cooled by design. Just keep an eye on that temperature gauge, or better yet fit a more accurate one that reads in degrees and not white lines

As for choosing a fan, I'd go with the Mondeo fan from the scrappy and then run it off a thermostatic switch like the one X-Eng sell.

Thanks for the help, mine tends to run quite hot, well according to the thermostat but still stays in the white.

So if it is running hot and I get less cooling I am worried about it overheating, but I guess I could just put the standard fan on again.

Would something like this be sufficient?

Whst is the CFM rating of a viscous fan at tickover and at say 3500 rpm?

Yep, mondeo fan with shroud fits perfectly, X eng switch aswell, good set up. Mine never overheats with this set up.

No idea fella, not sure there are any specs out there.

However, find one in proper working order give the engine a rev and you can feel the air flow is rather substantial. Sounds like a jet engine in the engine bay!

The problem with viscous fans is the fact that many don't work. As a result they either lock up all the time and over-cool the engine and sap power, or they don't lock up at all and the engine overheats. Electric fans have one great advantage that many forget about, and that is the amount of space available in the engine bay to work once the cowling etc. is removed! But they won't match a viscous for pure air-moving ability.

That eBay fan would do the job no doubt, but I'd go for the scrapyard option every time. Especially if you plan to go wading or off-road. Electric fans don't like being full of mud/water.

Same here, never overheats.

ok, looked up the local scrapyards and will visit them tomorrow. Failing that I'll go for the ebay fan or something like this

In that case , the above statement is bollix, without any form of proof.

Just about to do this myself, went to the scrap yard and I can have any fan for £5....forgot to check if it is the mondeo mk2 or mk3 fan that fits so well?

Plus I assume it's the single rather than double one?

I fitted a Kenlowe electric fan. I think its a 14 inch one, Its what was recommended by Kenlowe and Paddock. Best thing I did. The engine warms up much quicker. When its really cold like -18 degree C I still get heat coming through the heater and its never over heated. Mind you I did drive down to the south of France without any fan in the middle of the summer and it still did not overheat. I am preparing mine for a trip across Morocco so I went for what I believe to be a good electric fan. I'm not disappointed.

Its the single one you want, don't know which version but if you measure your rad to to bottom, the shroud is roughly the same size.
All I did was adapt it to fit by cutting the width to fit. It clips into the defender bottom bracket perfectly.
Easy enough.

Just like the counter-statement that an electric fan would shift more air, no proof either way. Having seen both viscous fans and decent electric fans in operation I'd say the viscous wins hands down for airflow/power.

It's an internet forum, he asked for advice and I gave a statement of my opinion from my experience. Chill out a bit...

its easy enough to work out an airflow, if your know fan area and speed, but I cant be arsed
