Right today I was changing the hoses for the intercooler etc and my 6mm spanner dropped right down the hole where the engine catch goes into, it seems to be between 2 radiators, now I can see the intercooler but when I look down the hole there seems to be 2 big radiators as I can look through the grill and see a radiator(not intercooler) but looking down the hole where the bonnet closes the spanner is behind that radiator and in front of another radiator.

I must admit I am confused, I thought there was only one radiator on the TD4? And an intercooler which I can see and its not that. Either way in my attempt to rescue the spanner I have damaged the front radiator but not sure if it even is a radiator.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

To answer my own question I think its the A/C rad, is that the one at the very front of the engine, ie nearest the grill?

The cooler pack (all cooling components) is made up of 4 separate radiators. The largest is closest to the engine, which is for the engine coolant.
The second largest is the AC condenser, which is in front of the coolant rad, and covers the lower 3/4 of said rad. Above AC condenser is the intercooler, which is slim but thicker in section than the AC condenser.
Below all the larger coolers is the steering cooler, which is basically a bent piece of black pipe, which is all that's needed.

To access the cooler pack, you will need to remove the front bumper, then all rads are clean to see. ;)

Thanks Nodge, sound advice.

Due to various poking and prodding trying to get this bloody spanner out some of the fins on the front rad at the bottom got damaged, they were brittle anyway so got it out through there. Which looks to be the a/c condensor rad. No damage apart from some missing fins, will get it replaced next year when it starts getting warmer again, being a/c its not a job I can do at home anyway.

And I have also ordered an extendable magnetic pickup tool!

I did try to take the front bumper off but several wheel well screws had the heads stripped at some point so didn't want to remove it without being able to get it back on so will order some new screws as backups.

3 hours to get out a spanner!
