Radiator popped today, just before I was ready to fit my Kenlowe fan, would you believe? Any advice on changing the rad and any checks to carry out while I am doing it would be most welcome. I reckon I will flush the lot out while I am at it, should I do that before I take the rad out, while the rad is out or wait till I get the new one in? Looking forward to constructive comments.

The question is why did the rad pop? Did it overheat or is it just a plastic fatigue failure. Flush while the rad is out.

Overheated after climbing a steep hill with a trailer on. Rad looks original, could be plastic fatigue, not too confident tho'. Had been following a lorry who was struggling a bit. Engine had been a little bit hot before which is why a bought the kenlowe fan. Hoping not a head gasket or crack. No emulsion in the oil filler or muck in the header tank so that bodes well. Will flush the system out while I am at it and fit the fan at the same time. I was thinking of putting the aircon fans on a separate switch as well, advice on how to do it?

Fit a new rad making sure that the centre baffle is in place in the top header, check the water pump and stat and also examine the viscous fan as any of those may be the cause. If you want, I can email you a wiring diagram for the aircon fans to use them as cooling fans.
Bonne Chance

Having a job getting the viscous fan off. Been bashing away towards the air cleaner and EAS compressor box - hope that is right!! anyone confirm? Also, got a nut and bolt at bottom of the rad being difficult, brass nut on a steel bolt in a plastic housing and it is turning. Looks like some major surgery on the bottom of the old rad tomorrow :frusty:

here you go fella, smack it in the direction of the arrow, make sure the belt is still on to take the tension. all diesels go in that direction. all petrols go in the other direction.

Thanks mate, that's me reassured. That is the way I have been whacking it to no avail so far. I think the belt might be a wee bit loose tho' so maybe I'll tension it a bit before I start, already put some duck oil on and left it overnight.
Cheers again

H if its a v8 your hitting it the WRONG WAY hit it towards the battery put some rags between the fan belt and pullys first then smack it

While you are at it change the thermostat and check your waterpump. Did you hear your fan noise increase as the engine temp increased? Hope you get it sorted.

No, didn't hear the fan noise increase, having got the fan off it seems as if it might be faulty anyway. Very stiff to move by hand when cold. I have a kenlowe HP fan to fit once the new rad arrives. Apparently, the carriers sent it to Dunstable instead of Weymouth????
I am thinking of fitting new stat, water pump, belts and tensioner. might be overkill but at the cost I reckon its worth it.
Fitted the PSI powerbox and it does seem to make a difference. Considering blocking the egr while I have it stripped as well, any comments?

Many thanks to all who helped and advised while I have been involved with this by the way.
