The R960 radio in my newly-purchased Discovery 300ES doesn't work. No display when I try to power it up.
Doesanybody happen to have a working one?
The one on eBay is a bit pricy (£90 + post) but there are a few more affordable R950 units; will they substitute satisfactorily?
I do have an unused Clarion radio - would it be an easy job just to swap that in? The separate amp pack under the passenger seat is spooking me a bit. All this is a bit rocket science for me.

The Philips R960 as fitted to your ES is the only one that comparable to the six CD player under the drivers seat and the bass amplifier in the back door. As for the amplifier under the seat I haven a clue the ES didn’t leave the factory with on fitted.
The Clarion will fit in the dash, it has of should have four loudspeaker outputs.

I swapped out my Discovery R960 head unit and CD changer years ago and sold it on eBay, then installed Pioneer head unit and CD changer, I did have a bit of a birds nest of wiring to put away but the rest was simple, I also added a 200 watt sub amp under the passenger seat with a 10 sub in a box sitting on the boot floor,

You have scared me to death there! All those wires!
I only want to hear the Radio 2 traffic announcements.
Can one buy ready-assembled adapter looms/plugs to convert from the R960 to a simpler set such as my ClarioN?

Ok that’s simples then, but it will be mix and match. Start with the four loudspeakers, pick the four pairs of wire that feed then from the head unit and join each pair to the relevant speaker, then find the two 12v supplies (permanent & switched) and connect to the head unit the plug in the aerial and install head unit and switch on.
There may be other functions that require connecting such as display dim when the vehicles lights are on.
Any aux items such as subwoofer, cd changer won’t match.
