R380 Type A/B

Anyone know if or how an R380 type B can take the shift tower from a type A? I've got a near dead type A from my Defender and an apparrantly good donor type B.

Oh everything apparrantly fits except the shift forks can't lock down because the locking nut receptical appears to be 90deg from where it needs to be for the type A shifter.

Everything I"ve managed to find on the net indicates that this isn't the only difference, but I can't seem to pin down exactly what those differences are. This being a long weekend means I can't call Ashcroft for the definitive answer so posted the question to see if there was anyone with previous expeerience in this.

Pity really. Likely have to sell the type B to get a type A.

Reply from David Ashcroft states that the selector rail is a different lenth. A strip down and replace of shift rail and yoke is required.

can you use the shift rail and yoke out of the box you have got

Likely.. but that seems as if there is way too much I could get wrong putting it back together for me to attempt. Read the tear down description in the overhaul manual. I don't have the experience or the correct tools to undertake that one.

If anyone has torn their 380 down and can comment here I sure would appreciate it.

I stripped a R380 to change the main shaft over so I could convert it to take a V8 to fit in my 90 project i was doing. But found that I was well out of my depth. built meany series boxes over the years and even with the parts manual for the R380, there are two many special tools needed. so ended up getting Dave Ashcroft to build one for me.

Thanks. 'bout what I've figured. Reread the overhaul manual since my last post and came to that conclusion. Unfortunately for me I'm on the other side of the world and so things take too much time and shipping kills. So all other options need to be looked at.

Otherwise would LOVE to nip over to Ashcroft and have it taken care of.
