R380 Short shaft gear box

Hi all

I have just found out that i have got a short shaft R380 gearbox in my 90 they say it is military speck?

is their any benefits of this model???

the shaft is shorter

nawt really, yer prob notice bit less slack when engagin low box and diff lock, might hear a clunk as it drops in then feel it tighten up on the trans, apart from that ( like its gona make a diffefence ) nothin really , have had one in a 90 pickup ex mod, run sound

I was told that it has a syncro reverse???

you have to pay a £250 surcharge on that box unless you give them a servicable exchange gearbox. If your gearbox was servicable why would you be exchanging it in the first place?

When Land Rover stopped manufacturing the LT77 and subsequently ran out of their stock, they had a demand from the military to provide a gearbox as a replacement. Land Rover then basically converted there newer R380 gearbox and offered it as a replacement for the older LT77. Obviously with the shorter shaft and bell housing. This means that you would have an older enging but with reverse over to the right behind fith. The part number was FTC4502 which LR now superseed to the R380 (TRC103480).
