Ok I have a leak between the g/box and t/box so before I took the t/box off I purchased out put shaft seal for g/box, input shaft o/seal for t/box and a set of "o" rings for the intermeidate shaft.
Now got the box out and theres that much oil and silicone sealent everywhere it's difficult to tell exactly where the leak if from (man box).

So as I have all the seals was going to replace them all now the t/box is out, my question, is it necessary to replace the collar on the output shaft too?
Thanks
Chris

not unlees you damage seal contact surfaces, pack rear of seal with vaseline preferably or grease to hold garter spring in seal they often come off when you tap seal home,if disco one you will need to retighten intermediate nut with large bar feeling intermediate gear so that you remove all freeplay but not over tighten,to pressurise bearings, put some good quality silicone sealant on inside of oring on intermediate shaft so that it pulls sealant over oring when shaft pulled through ,dont seal between the two boxes as there is little gap for any oil from either to drip out of bottom

Thanks JM,
Some one had already filled up the drain hole with sealant, so I have removed that, when I removed the new seal as I was not happy with the way it had seated I had to fish out the garter ring as it had come off, going to get another new seal and take your advice and pack it with vaseline.
Thanks again,
Chris.

If you,re talking about the " collar " that is pressed over the main output shaft from your main gearbox, you will have to pull this off, ( measure the distance from the end of the main shaft to the collar so you can put it back in the right place ), fit your new seal to the gearbox casing, ( carefull not to push it too far back ), and then drive the collar back on.

The new collar is cheap, so if your one is scored, I,d replace it.

I,ve been unable to find a way of putting this seal in without taking the collar off. ( or is the vasaline trick the way to do it JM ? )

As you can see from this picture, sealing both boxes together with silicone is not uncommon !.

you dont measure how far it sits ,the slot around it must not sit passed rear face of gearbox as all of slot is required to pull it off using special tool

I take it there is a bit of " tolerance " as to where the collar sits ?, ( as long as the seals run on it ?.

I am able to use the special tool to get the collars off. ( I imagine it would be difficult without it ? ).

yes your right but inner edge of slot inline with case face is correct, ive had a few recently that bust the collets on tool, had to weld them up

Is there ANY way of putting the seal over the collar WITHOUT taking it off ?. ( or is the vasaline trick the way ? ).

I tried once, and it just pushed the seal inside out.

I wondered about making a sleeve out of VERY thin rigid plastic, and sliding the seal over it. Always would be worried that the spring had come off though.

thin plastic sleeve would be perfect with vaseline holding spring ,ive used shimming steel in the past with tube made with flange to knock seal in flush

Its just got be rigid enough to stop the inner part of the seal turning out as it passes over the groove !.

I was thinking of the clear plastic they use in toy packaging, so you can see whats inside the box, joined wth packaging tape.

I,ve got an old collar, so after my childrens next birthdays, I,ll knock one up and try it !.

I've just asked swmbo if "we" have any vaseline, I've never seen that expression on her face before.
Thanks guys, I'm gonna try the vaseline approach and I may take up religion and start praying!

OK got the transfer box back in today, many thanks to Fifty Pence for the idea about the plastic, I laminated a sheet if plastic(without paper in it), rolled it into a cylinder and then slid it over the collar and put a couple of elastic bands(not too tight) to keep the correct diameter when pulled off.

I then got some fine packing tape and stuck it on to keep the correct diameter and removed the plastic bands.

Then I packed some vaseline in the seal to help keep the garter spring in and put a lot on the plastic sleave and gently slid the seal on to it.

With the seal on I then gently pushed the sleave over the collar making sure it goes as far as possible and with my special tool (an old bit of Merc exhaust pipe) gently tapped the seal in and once flush just pull the sleave out and hey presto all seems ok.

Thtas bloody great. Well done that man !.

You can see how, with the vasaline packed in there, theres a lot less chance of the spring coming out.

Well done, and great with pictures.

I'm also in trouble with a D2 TD5 output shaft seal, It's been done twice in two weeks and continues to leak:mad: We removed the flange on both occasions ...The oil seems to be coming from the seal alright.
