I know it's been bounced around on the forum before but after reading up on the details I have confused myself about the gearbox mountings. Let's say I stick with the series transfer case and use an Ashcroft adapter kit to connect to the R380 gearbox. Leave the transfer case in the same place
and move everything else forward - the transfer case has it's own mountings so do I still need gearbox mountings as well or are these instead of the transfer case mountings - which bit am I missing....

I thought it was engine and transfer case mountings only with the gearbox hanging inbetween but maybe I have it wrong....
Thanks very much

you could do it that way, with what engine ,i would fit 50a/56a defender short bellhousing lt77 with lt230 with def tunnel ,floor, plates etc with lt230 diff converted to 2wd unless difflock applied then 4wd parts are available and just require diff gears swapping for kit

I'm just V8 finishing conversion!

Are you putting into SWB or Long? Mine is SWB

I have put a sailsbury diff in back with 3.54 ratio's and am running a pretty serious TVR 4.3 V8. General concensus is the G/box will be lunched pretty quick, but I'm ok with that - its purpose in life (or death?) is so see how everything fits.

Bottom line on spacing is that if you go sailsbury diff, then this shortens drive shaft by about 1.5"

I have left Series G/Box in place BUT rebuilt TVR engine with P6 water pump - this saves about 3" on front of engine over other variants. In total leaves you with about 5" clearance to rad....

I will probably be fitting R380 next summer - it will be shortie version from ashcrofts, this means cutting off gearbox and engine mounts and welding approx 4" further forward....

otherwise loose 4" from gearbox and 1.5" from prop and thats one SHORT propshaft...

..Eitherway if you are converting a SWB and need prop lenghs or any other measurements gimme a shout.....

Also I favored fender 380 with disco 230, and ashcroft 2WD conversion.

it isnt ashcrofts shortie version they were made to fit were lt77 did after lt77 was replaced by r380 ,they are scarce but available ,it has shorter bellhousing to make up for longer rear housing to keep lt77 dimensions

Yes they are different....

...I might of read it wrong, but isnt he talking about sticking a R380 into a series? Or a 77?

Eitherway, dims are pretty much the same - as the shortie 380 is designed to be a bolt in replacement for 77..... that includes mounts etc...

Thanks for all the info. It's swb and still checking when you say gearbox mounts do you mean the mounts already holding the series transfer case otherwise I am thinking you'll end up with six mounts ...... engine-gearbox-transfer case....
