hi all, as the title states im having difficulty selecting 3rd and 5th gear on my 94 300 tdi defender with r380 box, to let you guys have a little more information on it; over the past month i have been loosing clutch fluid, i think this is down to the slave cylinder as there is no fluid seaping into the drivers foot well, however i have never let the fluid get too low and always top up well before needed. i have a slave cylinder on order and have read up that this could possibly cause the symptoms i am having however these symptoms only started yesterday afternoon after a good days worth of green laning on some really rough terrain.

it dosent matter if the engine is running or if the engine is off i still find it difficult to select 3rd and 5th, reverse is fine to select. if going from 2nd to 3rd i find 3rd to be 'blocked' however if i move the gear stick right and left while in this blocked position i can sometimes get the gear. 5th is more of a pita to select, anything below 40mph and i can usually select 5th but at that speed its useless and above that speed i have to pull back as if going to select reverse then i can select 5th or double clutch sometimes works.

i am hoping that this is mainly to do with the clutch, however i have read up that it could have something to do with the selector workings at the base of the gear stick, any help from you guys would be appreciated. many thanks.

id just like to add that i am planning to drain and check the magnetic plug on the gearbox for any 'unusual' pieces of metal and refill with fresh oil.

thanks again jamie

Sorry to bomb your post but I have a similar problem getting from 5th to 4th. I have to wiggle the stick or even put it into 3rd to then be able to get it into 4th!

Mines (1996 300tdi) had a new clutch recently but heard that it can sometimes be the Selector Yoke Bush (or Ball End Seat) that wears out (as it's plastic) and makes it difficult to select certain gears!

Be interesting to see what the others think!

Update... Drove less than a mile from home I now only have 1 gear, unsure as to what gear it is but it's a forward gear. Got me home. The gear selector is moving into the gear positions but it won't disengage from the gear that it's in. I have had to put th transfer box into neutral to move it around and it's quite heavy oh the joys of owning a Landy! Any suggestions here or any how to fixes you could recommend

Just an update for anyone interested, removed the gear lever cover today to inspect the yoke and linkage. I was hoping that either the torsion sping had come loose or the grub screw had worked its way loose, im sad to say that its none of these easy fixes. Looks like its a box off job. Now to keep an eye out for a decent used r380 box

I'm guessing that as you can only select 1 gear it's a bit more than the linkage! Sorry about that!

Ashcroft do a nice recon R380 for £495+vat+shipping! http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/manual-gearboxes.html

I'm toying with using them as they are reliable (according to this forum)!

Yeah i think thats the way in going to go. However i would like to keep my gearbox and strip id down to see what actually went wrong, i think ashcroft part exchange or you pay a higher price but will have a look into it. Cheers

have you tried removing box top and looking at the quadrant on selctor rod ,youll need to undo box mounts and lower box a couple of inches

To be honest i dont have the equipment or space to be able to do this but wish i did. However on a brighter note i have sourced a good used box for a really good price.
