My 2001 Defender has 119 K miles on it, the drive train has some backlash, but not too bad, the gearbox works fine but changes are becoming a bit clunky. I have re built a transfer box ready to swap over and I have an idea to get an R380 main box ready at the same time.

A while ago I bought a job lot from Tbay which was 1 gearbox + almost another gearbox., idea was to re bearing and tart it up ready to swap over.

So, I remember reading ( think it was James) that the cast iron casings are doweled then line bored and stamped with a letter so they should be kept together to maintain the line bore and correct gear mesh.
Looking at my parts there are two casings and it looks like the previous owner had cleaned up a casing fitted new sink rings and was looking to re assemble.
But I think the end plate he was looking at came from the other box, one pair seem to have no marking I can see while the others look like they are stamped with a B ( or an R ) tried rubbing chalk, and paint on the surface but its nor very clear, not helped by the fact that my eyes are like mintos these days.

The shafts look OK and I think the sink rings are new

Added to that one case has suffix "J" the other has "K" and my present box has "L"
So can anyone kindly help :
are there big differences in "J" - "K" - "L" boxes and can you use bits from one in the others?
I could go ahead and build the box with the B (or R) stamped on it or I could play safe and wait until I drop my own box get a bearing kit, use the rings I have and any other good spares, then re fit, but this would take a while.
