I am building my first landy, i wanted to avoid being a new landy tart by just having a leased freelander that they wont let me take off road, so i am building a 90 on to a new chassis. I have a TD5 chassis which is brand new. So question 1 is why does it not have tabs on the rear cross member for mounting the tub? i am putting a 90 tub on so whats the solution? I also need a new bulkhead and after being quoted £1600 for a new one by LR they mentioned that the new Puma bulkhead is £300 ish inc vat and available, will it fit the TD5 chassis and the 90 tunnel etc. Also i have the 19J engine and LT77 box will i ned to swap the crossmember from the 90 into the Td5 chassis? What Engine Mounts do i need will the 90 mounts fit? If i fit the 90 fuel tank what do i need to change over. Any other things i should be aware off?

Before you start have you worked out if you would have enough points accumilated to even be able to register it? What identity would it take on? It would be pointless to build it if you can't use it.

It will get an ID of it's own. It will most likely end up as a Q plate. If the chassis is brand new from Land Rover (not as expensive as you'd think) then it should have a chassis number with it and you can use that to get a MOT. I would also expect it to need an SVA/IVA test. DVLA are the best people to ask regarding that.

Regarding your tub and bulkhead mounting questions. I think it would be better to make new mounts rather than transfer from an old chassis. I would also consider a TDi engine rather than the 19J.

Hi Matt,
I admire the fearless! I see more threads coming than you'll find in Matalan.

I'll have to build a cross reference index of the Microfat catalogue ...

You may find this site useful for the tooling, I'm looking at one of these for a complete re-bushing of me Landy.
Sealey Hydraulic Press 10ton Bench Type Plus FREE Angle Grinder : Sealey : Tooled-Up.com

Good luck!

It'd be cheaper just burnin' out yer old rubber bushes and stickin' polybushes in, piece of pish changin' them in the future;):D

I just love the idea of watching them slide out smoothly... I'll probably rent one for a week, but I do LOVE my tooling! Think of all the things i can fix with that.

Serious question on Polybushes. Are they much better than the std rubber / neoprene ones? How long do you reccon it would take to do all the bushes on a 2002 90, (it's pretty clean under)?

polybushes and all of the same similar are a complete waste of money - they'll last a fraction of the time a set of OEM bushes will, and i'd bet a lot of money that you'd not notice the difference between them

Don't we all mate;) :D

Tough question that is.. some say stick with rubber and others say go for the poly's. the poly's are supposed to be super tough and outlast the rubbers, but only time will tell;)
Another tuffie question.. It'll depend on how long it will take ye to get yer .. say both radius arms off and how long it will take ye to get yer old bushes out. If yer goin' down the poly route, then they'll probably take about ten minutes to fit thum;):D

had the poly's on me old 87 90 and they are a vast improvement firms the suspension travel up nicely becomes nice and crisp off road the rubber 1's were very much like jelly compared to them ;)

but the bushes that you'd removed where almost certainly the originals as fitted back in 87 so you'd expect to be able to notice - but i bet the poly's wont last a fraction of the time the originals do

took me 3 week ends to fit mine to a disco, but i'm very thorough when i do a job an i took my time, as buster can tell ya:rolleyes:

Ah've got thum on me bus as well and agree that it sure is crisp;) Don't really know how the rubber ones should feel like as when ah got the bus as the bushes were well fecked!

BTW jwotsits, why are ye thinking of changin' yer rubbers if it's only a 2002 model??

I know I'm off piste with this thread now (Sorry Matt), but anybody know what they use in competition Poly or Rubber? Cars are built to a budget , competition cars are built to win.

answer me that then anyone? :focus:

what sorta competition ?

if you mean track or race vehicles it'll be a short life silicone composite set that'l be replaced VERY regularly

Okay guys thanks for those who have posted so far, i am hoping to look into the validity of the project further today as far as DVLA goes, but as the old saying goes what they dont know wont hurt them and unless i have to rock the boat i aint gonna rock the boat after all its just a new chassis, everything else apart from the bulkhead is old. I still need some advice on the bulkhead fitment if i fit the puma bulkhead to a TD5 chassis will it fit, and line up with the other bits. I am going the polybush route and these are on order as well as a 2 inch lift kit from foundry 4x4 with open turrets etc, the final colour is going to be drab olive (not my choice but i co-own the landy and he has to have some say) also a quick final question for now the transfer box lever moves but seems to have no effect on final drive, it has been suggested that the mechanism has seized as they are seldom used, is this a difficult repair or should i consider a swap out tbox?:D

Most of my experience is with trials and winch challenge competitions.

After a brief flirtation with blue polys a few years back by far the most now run standard rubber bushes.

There are some exceptions. The panhard rod on comp safari vehicles and some challenge motors will be bushed with blue polys simply for ease of replacement as they do seem to wear the quickest out of all the bushes. Think about what the panhard rod is doing (sideways axle location) and think about heavy winches or hard landings. Compare those to the a-frame at the back and you'll see why.

There has been a recent move (last 2 years) to rose jointed panhard rods as these joints are supposed to be harder wearing. However, their 'open' nature leaves them susceptable to grit and dirt ingress.

Now we are waaaaay off-topic :D
