Just a quick few questions if I may (its an early 90's defender 90 na)

First off, can anyone tell me the name or partnumber of the bushing in the photo (located as shown above rear wheel). Is it difficult to change?
There is a very noticeable 'clonk' when changing gear under acceleration (acceleration, ha! :D) that appears to be from the rear axle. This is the only problem I can find, would this bushing cause the clonk?

The other one is I get a fair amount of white smoke when I fire it up from cold. It disappears when you load it (drive off), but if you let it idle after starting the smoke continues.
Its the kind of smoke that stings your eyes and doesnt smell of oil, so I'm fairly convinced its not blue oil smoke.
It doesn't concern me particularly, but if its easy to check out or find a solution to I would appreciate any advice. Its just a little embarrassing leaving the supermarket carpark in a cloud of smoke!

Thanks guys

upper shock mount bushing (rear)

check your universal joints (UJ's) on the propshaft.

dont worry about the smoke if it clears. sounds like overfueling, is it using any water?

Rear upper shock mount bush. It can clonk, but it's more likely to be UJ's.

Dunno about the smoke .. ;)

The clonk is probably the A-frame ball joint, not a difficult job and i think from memory about 12 quid for parts.

The smoke is probably (o im on the fence tonight) your timing on the pump...mines the same, just need adjusting. Not a worry unless it smokes all the time..and you say it doesnt. Most landys smoke a little on start up, its the unused fuel burning off...then they clear as the engine heats up.

Part nr cant help you with at the mo...maybe later...Mark

sounds like a uj too me....and try changing your fuel filter, there cheap as chips and i think it may cure your'smoking habit'

Hi Swampdonkey,
Now why would changing the fuel filter stop the smoking on start up. Surely if it was blocked there would be fuel starvation. In my experience white smoke is caused either by water in the combustion (head gasket) or by excess diesel, or if you are real unlucky the oil seal on your Turbo, but that's smoke at speed not idle. So I'm with Storm99 on this one.

youl not an argument from me on that one......just that ive seen simalar prob before and a new fuel filter cured it......maybe its a little water in the line or whatever....but for the cost of £7 its gotta be worth a try

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

Griff, thanks for the links.
The only reason I discounted the UJs is that it doesnt rattle when driving or using the engine to brake. Just when changing gear. I'll have a gander at the UJs when opportunity presents itself though.
I haven't had it long enough to check for water usage, but I'll keep an eye on it.

Mark, the A frame seemed solid, that was my first thought too. The bushing in the photo was all that I could find that was worn. When I grabbed the A frame and shoved it there was a small clonk from the side that the worn bushing is on.
When I get moving the smoke stops. Its a fair old cloud which is the only reason it bothers me.

Swamp, fuel filter was changed as part of a full service but a few weeks ago (part of the purchase deal).
My first theory was water in the fuel, but I have filled it up since then so unless BP are cutting with water that theory is out.

I have thought of the other question, I have one of the MOD 6 way light switches, just wondering if anyone has a breakdown of what all the settings mean. Some of them dont seem to do anything.
Between that and all the switches for the various flashing lights and floodlights its like the cockpit of a 747 :D

Cheers

I'd say A frame ball joint ( get a prybar on the job as you might have a hard time checking with your hands )
and a dirty injector ( dribbling and not atomising the fuel )

In the injection pump, low down, is a transverse sort of bulge across the bottom.

Hydraulic Injection Timing Mechanism

This is a device which alters the injection timing according to the FUEL PRESSURE crated by the transfer pump, and that can be dependent on the fuel supply when the engine is running slowly. The timing is at full RETARD on startup, and is advanced as the transfer pressure builds up when the revs increase. If it doesn't advance soon enough, white smoke will appear due to a combination of cold engine innards and retarded injection timing at that time.

If it isn't that sort of Injection pump .... forget I said this, but if it is as you say a 2.5NA then it is all but certain to be a Lucas CAV pump just as described. I took one completely to bits two weeks ago, and rebuilt it AND IT WORKS!!!!

if no play in anything else perhaps its that other landy favourite drive flange splines mine goes through at least a pair a year.

Ok thanks guys.
I'm going to take a prybar to the A frame and the drive shafts when its next dry and light at the same time. Suppose I'll replace the worn bushing too.
I'm reluctant to fiddle with the injection pump. Are the injectors a service item, or are they good for the life of the engine? Should they be replaced after a certain milage?

Any help on the 6 way light switch guys?

Cheers

bloody hell....as ex army i should remember what all the settings are on the light switch but cant...they wont all work for you....one is infra red headlamps, one is just a small light onto the diff, one gave just headlamps and on tail lamps..i cant remember all the settings but this place is full of ex military
