Question about secondary air injectors

What do they do? i know why they were introduced in the 60's but what use are they now. the garage replacing my engine called me to say they are removing them cos they are no longer any use. if they are no longer any use why were they on there in the first place.

just looking for a bit more knowledge.

Make sure they do it properly or you might,(Will) end up with the check engine lamp on all the time.....

Duly noted but i have no idea how to check whether they have done it properly or no. Any clues for what i should look out for or is it a case of waiting till i get it back and watch the check engine light?

I think you just need to wait and see - tell them not to throw any of the bits away......
