Hi all,

I'm looking at getting the QT front diff guard and rear diff rock slider for my Disco.

Has anyone fitted these before?

I think the front is fairly straight forward - I think one end the damper bolts onto the guard instead of its current mounting.

However, there are two types for the rear rock slider. One for a rubber drive coupling and one for a non-rubber drive coupling.

Does anyone know which bit is the drive coupling - it is easy to see if it's rubber or not? Or even better - based on my car being a 96 V8, anyone know if it would be rubber or not?

I've read a few good comments about these guards - they seem to be the ones to get at the moment.
Does the front protect the track rod sufficiently - or is it better to get a full length track rod guard? (the only one I've seen is from Scorpion).

Any thoughts / ideas appreciated. Thanks.

cant help you with fitment details but the front diff guard will not protect your steering components. you hgave to get a steering guard for that. check paddocks for good deals. go for the thick guage ones and poss alu ones too as they are lo9ads lighter.

fitting diff guards is a piece of ****. dont worry about it. the rear one should fit by undoing 4 bolts placing the guard in and doing the bolts up again. nothing fancy.

I've fitted a normal steering guard for the front steering components.

I'm talking about the track rod behind the diff. Apparently QT have a guard which goes under the diff (to slide on) and then around the track rod.

The rear one is a wrap around which also protects the end of the drive shaft.

hi, i've got QT diff gaurds front and back on my 1994 commercial disco, no problem to fit though i'd say due to the design they are a little tight (only a littl though. as far as i know the coupling you are asking about is on the end of the rear prop shaft before the diff you'll see if its the rubber one!
gaurds are exellent by the way!! :D

Thanks Matt, I'll take a look.

I've heard these guards are pretty good because they allow you to slide over stuff rather than just protect the front of the diff and they're quite good value.

Here are a couple of pics of mine. I have a 99 Discovery II and I purchased a Defender Td5 Front Diff Guard because you can bolt it on without having to weld 2 lugs to the diff to fit the Discovery one. Also As my Disco is off the road I had mine painted bright yellow, very bling. Did Alloy Steering Guard yellow as well.

They won't stay this pretty very long.

By the way I purchased mine from Brookwells.

:D

I've been thinking about fitting the QT diff guards but I might have a problem. I've fitted a tank guard, more for the removable towbar that it gives me than for the protection. It doesn't leave all that much clearance between the back of the rear diff and the front edge of the tank guard, about half an inch with the disco sitting straight and level. So how much of that half inch would the diff guard take up? I've got visions of clashing guards......:(

if yer fitting diff guards make sure yer clean out the mud that gets trapped behind them otherwise yer stand a good chance of yer diff rusting out..................quicker than normal

fitted two sets to the last two disco no problems atall . however had to use atrolley jack to allign the last bolts.
Saved my diffs on two many occasions to count . DO IT wotrth ever penny and gives you that added comfidence when your buddie in frond starts to dig a rut with his diff you FLY over,!!!!

Qt guards, tom fitted ours. Rear one was alright to fit, the two versions of the guard for that spacer? just get the spacer version to make sure. I did need it (94 300tdi)

front one, one hell of an arse, specially with the vibration damper on the bottom of the diff housing weighin loads, almost knocked tom out on point.

I have removed the vibration damper on all three of my discos never had any problems . its a birmingham fix any way "if in not sure bang on a large lump of metal !!!!!"
However i do not do over 70 in mine so bewhere.
its worththe effort and gives you peace of mind .
if you dont do it ever time you go off roading you will be thinking "should have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
ahhhhhhhhh thats landrovers for you

just got my front qt diff guard for my disco 1 - looks a right faff to fit trying to get at the bolts on top of the diff (i dotn ahve a ramp so its gonna be a driveway job)

I got a rear one as well but that went on easy

any advice on fitting the front one from those that have done it

its pretty much the same, you've just gotta be flexible and you'll eventually do it, think tom used ratchet spanners cos of limited room

watch the vibration damper i mentioned before, its a dougnut shaped lump, thats the difficult bit, but it can be done on the drive

I used a trolley jack to push the diff guard in to alligmnment and first time I bought a qt set they sent short bolts so if they dont reach be aware!
i also throw away the counterbalance ,never missed it and have done two discos with qt guards now.
good luck
regards paul vp
