There is an ongoing recall just now on these engines. When off road at extreme articulation, the front prop can foul the sump, eventually wearing through and leading to loss of engine oil.

Trew's had a few probs with his - aint he - so the rumour shop maintains?

Minor niggles compared to what the gaylander girls get, and it aint cost me a penny in repair bills.

When you've bought a spankin noo motor, you feel justified in complainin about an occasional drop of water in the passenger footwell (now sorted) and a minor vibration / noise at low speed (not sorted yet).

Replacing the clutch and front diff was LR's idea - I hadn't noticed anything wrong. I guess they've had some failures and are doing it as a precautionary measure.

My only real gripe is the fool consumption. It's averaged 23mpg over 3000 miles. That's mostly short journeys and moderately heavily loaded. And it's still a hell of a lot better than my V6 gaylander was.

Cruising comfortably at 70, with plenty of power to spare, whilst being able to hold a quiet conversation and with the interior as warm or cool as you like, is a big plus.
 
Intersting this. How long has the recall been going?

I towed a Honda estate last week with no problems. Nowt too heavy, but must have been more than a ton I suppose.

I average about 30 m.p.g in mine for allsorts of driving.

Yes i've had some niggles, but my major gripe is with the dealer, not the vehicle. Still, no surprise there!

My heater's fine too :D.

on my second puma had new clutch in first one still think there grate often pull 3000kg to 4000kg no problem
 
I’ve had a few reliability issues of which here are a few that come to mind in the last six months!

1 x heater control replaced
1 x radiator replaced
2 x transfer boxes replaced
1 x set of gear selectors replaced
1 x gearbox awaiting replacement
1 x Rear diff replaced
Both front swivel housing seals replaced.
Both rear passenger door locks (central locking) fail to work 100% in cold weather.
Clocks replaced
Electrical faults, don’t even go there!
Heated seats replaced.
Windscreen has just cracked all the way across for no apparent reason!
Paint falling off front radiator panel.
Rust, yes plenty and this includes galvanised parts.

Engine management alarm activates at least once a month sometimes activating engine recovery mode i.e. 5 mph (this means I cannot go beyond the local area without carrying a HawkEye unit) :eek:.

With exception of the very latest models, I’ve owned almost every model i.e. SII onwards and I’ve never experienced such reliability problems such as the above

Although my local L/R dealership has so far honoured the above work under the vehicle warranty, I’m not sure what is going to happen after this warranty expires!
The only sensible financial option will probably be is to sell it SOLD AS SEEN!

Will I ever buy another new Land Rover, not a chance? I’ll be looking at the Japanese market thank you very much.


One last thing, if you’re thinking of maintaining / working on the vehicle yourself, well forget it.

Due to the fact the Puma has only been around for three years!

There are no parts/workshop manuals available, so you’ll have no points of reference!!!!

This sucks, believe me with the daily running issues of this model you’ll need them or a very friendly dealership.
 
Just after warming the wife to a commercial vehicle and talking myself into a 110 XS utility S/W, instead of a Hilux Invincible, I come across this poor chap whose Defender seems loaded with problems :-(

Hmm, what do I do???

I had a clutch change at 16k miles after pulling a horsebox with two horses off road. On the day all the jap 4x4's had no problem. The dealership blamed me for "abusing" it. Anyway I can't afford to sell so I'll hope for the best.

How many people have burnt out clutches, and not realised thats what LOW RANGE is for...

JohnnyA: Friday car I think. Other than the water in fuel problems, IMHO, they are generally quite reliable...

EDIT: Other than the gearboxes, major issues with early boxes jamming in gear...
