Hi guys,
My name is Mike and I am hoping to purchase a 52 - 54 plate L322 range rover sometime soon. I currently have an E39 M5 that has 115k on the clock and I want to take this off the road and keep it as a weekend summertime car. I have also recently added to my family, it is now me versus 4 females, my wife and 3 daughters, needless to say I currently spend (and for the next 25years or so) am going to spend a lot of time in my garage. I am a mechanical engineer by trade and am passionate about all motors, so I am more than happy to get stuck in with car maintenance, I do all the required work on the E39 myself.

My wife has a diesel focus that is cheap as to run but getting smaller by the year. We are looking to get a large family vehicle that will fit us all in comfortably and of course be reliable. I am never going to buy a Ford galaxy, Citroen picasso etc etc so a large 4x4 is what is required. My wife likes the X5, however I have always been a fan of the P38 and L322 Range Rovers.

I am OK with going to look at these cars, I understand and have an eye / ear for checking over cars so I can cover the basics myself, what I would like from you guys is some specific known faults to look for. I have read somewhere the early diesel L322's have injector issues for example, this does not scare me I would have no problem correcting this if required. I also understand that a 8year old car of any make will have a few issues here or there, putting these things right is half the fun of being an enthusiast.

Also I am unsure about diesel v petrol, the mileage a year will be about 5k. The M62 BMW engine is very similar to the S62 V8 in my E39.

So, any advice here is greatly appreciated, apologies for the long post, thanks for reading.

Mike

thanks a lot for that list, that is exactly what I was after. I understand what is being said about reliability, although the majority of these cars clock up big miles so are capable of lasting.........
