Sooty is normal, the smoke to me doesn't look dark enough to be too rich by the sound of things and that horrible smell its burning oil when you leave it oils runs down the valve stems in to a piston chamber and has to be burnt it off when started IMO just an opinion you could have work valve seals short mileage I know has oil been changed bad seal assembly Anythink . Once hot and enging is working less oil has chance to build up do still smells but less smoke untill left again

Sounds like a good lead! The oil was supposedly changed before I brought it. But it is very black! The LR dealership said that is normal as oil in defenders goes black almost straight away! I wasn't so convinced.

Will mention your thoughts to them but it doesn't go back until the 2nd of Jan now!!

Well good luck chill out forget for now ......

Just had the same problem with the wifes, Smoking like an old Massey then the engine management light came on. Rang L.R Assistance and they sent a fella out who said it was a faulty EGR Valve and a MMI Air Flow Meter Fault. So they have just recovered it and sent me a Vauxhall Insignia. Keep at em mate till they're sick of the sight of ya, and make em fetch it every time..;) Good luck with it.

Not so. Even after several thousand miles, the oil in my TD5 was relatively clear. Certainly not black! Unless the TDCi is different.....

Did you ever say if it was only from cold or it also does it when warm?

Have you checked the glowplugs are working if it's only from cold?

Also, have you plugged in a obdii scanner?

Ok thanks. I am gunna give LR the list of all these suggestions. The smoke clears once properly warmed up although it still smells bit. Sorry but not sure what the scanner is you mentioned but LR did say they plugged it into a computer and it didn't show any fault.

To be honest mate, giving in a list of suggestions probably won't be much help. The dealer will have to work to strict procedures set out by LR to get the warrenty claim paid. They won't start ripping the engine apart from suggestions off a forum, it's more than likely the technician will have an idea what's up with it anyway but justifying that so the dealer gets paid from warrenty could be the pain in the arse. Crazy I know but that's how things work.

Hi, Yeah I see your point. The only difference being in this case is that it isn't a Land Rover warranty. I brought the car from I third party garage and they have instructed m to take it to my nearest LR dealership. The garage literally rang LR with their credit card and paid the first bill.

Ready to give up with this now! Think I am just going to put up with it. LR dealership have had it back on numerous occasions and to be honnest the are crap! Never experienced such a useless bunch of tits. The garage I brought it from have been great and have paid for all the work to be done that LR said needed doing but it is still smoking on start up. Not as bad as it was though! They have now replaced the oil vacum pump??? And some hoses. The LR dealership even tried adding 300 quid to the cost of the pump!
Dont know what to do with it. Should I just except it? LR say eveything has been checked. But I have completely lost faith in them.
