Hi ya,

I have recently brought a 2007 TDCI Defender. Everything seemed ok but I have just noticed that there is blue smoke coming from the exhaust for 2-3 minutes every time you start the engine. The smoke seems to be getting worse and I have noticed a few spots of oil on my drive.
The smoke smells very strongly of oil, quite an acrid smell!

I have not noticed any power loss but when it smokes and you rev the engine it does seem like it could be missing very slightly.

Luckily it is under warranty with the garage so it should be covered but I just wondered if anyone had any ideas to what it may be and what I should check for as I am no mechanic.

Thanks all

Lee

I went to a local dealership a couple of weeks back to buy a spare part for my 90. As I drove in, they were in the process of moving the stock around on the forecourt. Someone had just started up a brand new Puma 90 and that was smoking like an absolute bitch too. I drove through a veil of black diesel smoke  If I'd just bought that, I would not be chuffed.

Not too chuffed about it but it is now booked in with LR dealership and the garage I brought it from are being very good and paying for everything. Got to wait until Tuesday though! Still glad to be back in the world of Defenders though! Anything else just doesn't cut it for me.

Greetings. I'd be very interested to hear what the cause of it was and what has been done to fix it. Result about the warranty. Hope you get it back in time for the snow!

if its underwarranty anythink wrong with it take it straight in as the warranty wont last forever
ensure they do a properjob and dont let them tread all over you

I too would be interested to know the cause of the smoke I've seen a few do this
Only oil leak I've seen on the tdci' s is the plastic cover in front of the fuel pump and also the vac pump.

Hi guys,

Well the LR dealership have diagnosed it as the egr valve and a leaky vacuum pump seal.

Can anyone out there with knowledge tell me if either may have caused a knocking noise from the engine?

They have ordered the parts and are fitting them this week. They said it may have caused the knocking but they will reassess once the new parts are fitted.

Any thoughts people?

Thanks

Although mine hasn't got an oil leak it pretty much knocks, rattles and smokes!

Its a transit engine. A certain amount of it you just have to put up with!

Having said that mine is chipped as well so smokes a little more perhaps and the EGR was replaced on it under warranty!

Turns out it was pressure relief valve, fuel vapour valve and a leaking vacuum pump gasket. All fixed now

Guys , a week on and the smoking seems to be back to where it was. I expect a bit of smoke on cold start from a diesel engine but this can't be right. It bellows out the back on start up.

Anymore ideas???

Take it back asap under warranty. By the time they finish diagnosing by fitting new parts.. you might have a brand new fender :D :p :D

Personally I think it's the gearbox, transmission and the diffs.. yes they should all need changing out for new. :D Take a vid and whack it up on youtube
