Hi all, I’m having an issue with my 2005 sport and wondered if anyone could please help?
My sport is having a light problem; on unlocking and entering, the main light comes on and also my footwell, no other lights work unless you switch them on....That’s not all,
On switching my lights to side, nothing comes on, not even the dash lights. When selecting main, headlights and side come on but no dash lights. On selecting AUTO all lights work, including the dash lights.
I’ve checked the light switch and checked diagnostics but nothing
Can anyone please help??

Sounds like a right faff?
So it all works on auto?
Had any problems with the battery at any point?
None start or sluggish start?
They are unbelievably fickle on a failing battery.....o_O

Hi Mark, thanks for getting back. I’ve recently bought this and it wasn’t in the cleanest condition and on cleaning it I did find some battery terminal caps. Do you think this could be the cause? My next move was to check the light module but I don’t know where it is?

Hi Dan, I believe it’s had a new battery but not sure of the history??
If this is the case, could this have damaged anything?
Hi Rob,
I meant in your recent ownership.
Did it ever have properly functioning lights etc. Is this something new, or has it always been like it since you have had it?
Was looking for a "trigger-event" that has made it start misbehaving.

Hi Dan, this is a problem that’s been with the car since buying it. I got it cheap and am no stranger to stripping and repairing p38’s, that said, I thought I’d nail this but it’s got me stumped

Hi

May i ask what model of sport is it please, ie is it a HSE

Is there a small box behind ur rear view mirror

Have u got wiring diagrams for the wiring circuit switch, if not plse let me know and can find some for u , the auto switch links ur wipers into the system as well, ie rain sensor

Ur able to disable the interior lights , on ur front overhead light press the middle black button and look on ur instrument panel , it will come up either lights on or off, u just hold that middle button in to turn the interior lights on or off

If the rear centre light doesn’t work when u open the door the circuit board may have failed

But with a wiring diagram it’s best with the use of a multimeter start with the associated fuses and work u way through the system

What diagnostics did u use please

I’ve got a D3 which is very similar to ur sport

Hope that helps a little

Here’s a wiring diagram just in case u haven’t got one

Plus when u move the dimmer switch do the lights brightness change

Hope that gives u a start

Hi Stuart, many thanks for the diagrams, no I didn’t have any. The car is a HSE, so far I’ve checked all the fuses with a multi-meter and I’ve tried another light switch that I know works. My next move was going to check the light module but I can’t find it?? My diagnostics is Snap-on, I’m able to switch the side lights on using this but not by the switch.

Hi

Glad it’s if some use

Let me do some more digging for u and will report back for u

Ref ur interior light , does ur boot light come on when u open the boot plse , or is it just the middle seat light that doesn’t come on when u open the door , thks

Plus do all of ur brake lights work,

Assume you’ve also tested the relays and the underbonnet fuses , the 40 amp fuses so with a multimeter u can start at the engines fuse box and work u way through it

As if the middle light failed it could have blown fuses or relays under the bonnet

Hi

From what I can see the auto light is on another circuit

So I would start using a multimeter and with the fuse box under the bonnet to ensure it feeds power to the fuse box in the passenger footwell , testing each fuse plus relays as u follow the wiring diagrams , going through it step by step

there doesn’t seem to be a light ecu , but all incorporated via the passenger fuse box

Plse let us know how u get on

Also this site is very good for technical info

Hi Stuart, cheers for getting back. Right when I unlock the car the main light in the front comes on and also the drivers footwell. None of the door lights work, the rear light doesn’t and neither does the boot light. All brake lights work. I work away all week so won’t be able to check until the weekend, unless I manage to get in the area.
Thanks for all your advice and help.

@gstuart I notice the op says he is using snapon as diagnostics. Is this RRS fully compatible? I know the FFRR is snooty about which diagnostics she will speak to. Just wondering if the RRS / D3 are the same?

Hi

I’m not sure ref the snap on, as the RRS is a 2005 it should have the same electronics as the D3

However as the op interior lights don’t work there should be a DTC , because with my gap iid it will tell me if a bulb is not working , or even when I changed my interior bulbs to led it senses they had been changed because of the difference in ohms being fed back to the iid

personally don’t know how the FFRR and sport systems compare , but very surprised the snap on isn’t reading any DTCs in the sport
