Fancy one and lookin at one on fleabay (they dint come up in these parts too often!) but was wonderin if anyone can give us any pointers as to watch out for with a second hand one - what goes wrong, what to look for when buying, what i should look at paying for the whole kit and anything else??

Am i better off forking out the extra for hydraulic?

There is one that runs off the PAS, but it is very slow. This crowd do them all new and there's a couple of hundred quid difference in getting one with the dedicated zf pump which means it isn't reliant on the PAS pump - speeds it up a bit too.

They are like hens teeth on ebay though and when they do come up they always go for almost the new cost anyway.

The PTO one i'm watching on flrabay has a knackered cable anyway so i'd have to fork out for that (Don't think it's too far from you Ratty!) but am in two minds, i think really anything other than hydraulic is a compromise.

Yep avoid using the power steering pump as a power source. A tail lift, tipper body or speclift all in one pump/resevoir/switch pack is what you want.

Odenne. If you buy the winch and need it picking up to await the landyzone courier service give me a shout.

Cheers Ratty, good spot but i've seen them and theor things are well expensive, i would hope to get the whole hydraulic kit for less (one went the other day for something a bit over 300, but it was a bit far away!)

Cheers for looking though, the PTO ones do look good and seem to have massive pulling power!

You could try making a stupid offer. The worst that can happen is that you get told to bog off.;)

He seems to have set the auto-responder to offers fairly high, it kixks in at £300, and he wants VAT added to the final price which means it's well over £500 - i hate it when they do that! I remember seeing his on here before, he had a buy-it-now on a pto winch for a grand - greedy bastid! Get the full hydraulic kit for that, new!

Hi there,

I'm just rebulding a Fairey PTO winch, I don't know the exact type, as there is no identification plate allready, but this one was often fitted to late 80's Land Rovers. What I need to know is, where I can get the double lip oil seals in imperial dimensions and possibly some other parts, as bearings etc. Also a part catalogue would be very helpfull.
