Hi all

I am currently in the process of stripping a 300tdi Disco down to turn it into a tractor and was wondering if anyone new whether you can fit a PTO?

I seem to remember the old series land rovers had them as an optional extra.

Can you fit them to the transfer box? Or maybe replace the air con pump with a hydraulic PTO pump? I have no idea how strong a pump like that would need to be. Am hoping to run stuff like a topper.

Also if anyone knows where you can get standard size tyres with tractor tread pattern that would be useful. Although I'm not sure I'll end up getting them as they're probably well expensive and this was meant as a project to save me buying a tractor.

Cheers

Not cheap either but here you go Koenigwinches PTO Landrover LT230 Defender, Discovery Range Rover

in all honesty, unless you are doing this tractor project just for the hell of it, forget about it a) being any cheaper than buying an aged classic tractor, b) having anything more than scrap value at resale unless you make a very tidy job of it.

I helped on a project where we sliced off the body of an accident damaged RRC dropped in my old perkins lump I'd picked up for my series but never fitted, PTO sourced and fitted and on went a 12mtr boom with a 1500ltr spray tank, 33x12.5x15 grizzly claws and away it went, been going strong for the last 17yrs and will keep going too. But if you put a price on it, wheels and tyres 850, pto +shafts and output 3100, steel and consumables circa 900. Bear in mind we were a heavy plant workshop with just about everything you'd need to machine and mill any special parts, there were a number of things we had to modify in order to make it work as we wanted, turning down the input in order to fit bigger bearings, custom work on the prop as nothing off the shelf short enough.

Around 3yrs after being converted we home built a 3pt linkage, I never got to see the finished install of the pto but it ended up being selectable between rear and sprayer, the rear axle had pneumatic rams that you deployed on a switch to stop the springs compressing when lifting on the link arms. Air came from original engine compressor on the perkins, Hydraulic pump ran off a toothed crank pulley to give lift and a single as well as double acting spool.

Just remember, the refurb and upgrades were on a vehicle already working as a tractor, the second stage cost well over 4K with the hydraulics!

Go for it, post up pics and show us what you're doing.

Thanks for the info

Yours sounds pretty awsome, would love to see pics of that. I don't think I need anything quite as serious though! And yeah it was just for the hell of it, my missus has taken on some land for her sheep and the ant hills are 2ft high!

It's not going to be road legal and is probably going to look like something from Mad Max by the time I've finished with it.

I'm limited with how much cash and time I can throw at it so it will be a slow project. I always forget to take pics but will try and remember. It's easy to get stuck into something and the hours/days go by, you know how it is :)

Cheers

That one is on the island and I live in the middle of mainland Europe now so I doubt I will see it again in person and at a time when 35mm film was still king so no pics from me either, just a couple of scars and fond memories of building it.

Do try and go for purpose built and proffessional levels of workmanship, it pays off when youget to proudly show it off ;)
