Hi all, just picked up my first defender 90 4c and i have play in my front prop shaft, i dont think its the ujs and it also turns a fair bit by hand, the back is nice and tight, not sure what would be the problem. it makes a bad clunk when i pull away as the prop engages and also when i change gear. hope someone can help. cheers

You'll get about 20-30mm of rotational play as normal, sometimes even more ... nothing to worry about. Just make sure the UJ's are tight and the sliding joint only has movement as it slides and isn't loose. Also make sure they are well greased on all 3 nipples. Mine clunks too ... most do ;)

Thanks for the replie. mine does clu k really bad on pull away. apart from the ujs what else could it be. its a loud clunk and its alot of rotational play.

With the a trame joint would that cause the front prop to have lots of play as i think thats what is causing the clunk and it also vibrates when i get to 40mph and seems to stay there i can do nearly 70mph and still vibrates

diff, cv's, drive shafts, drive flanges, t box diff, inter box gear, A frame ball joint, UJ's. take yo pick

As MHM says, also gearbox main shaft wear and transfer input gear, combine that with wear on the rest of the drive train, most have clunks you can either live with it or replace, first things to check thou are all bushes, a frame ball joint, and grease both props then go from there.

A-frame ball joint is nothing to do with prop ... you can see it above the rear diff and you check it by trying to move it with a crow bar ... shouldn't be loose at all. Shaking is usually swivel pin bearings or wheel bearings and again won't cause the clunking. As MHM says it could be a whole host of things ... mine does it and one day I'll change the part that causes it when I know what it is ;)

Its just been polybushed throughout. Will have a loom tomoro. any ideas on the vibrations when i hit 40mph and dosnt stop till i go below 40

Sounds like UJ's to me....to check chock wheels, in neutral and handbrake off. Try and wobble side to side and up and down....shouldn't be any movement other than directional. Look for cracking on the endcaps as well.
