Prop shaft removal and improved MPG

Ok so I have a problem with the front part of the prop, I removed it last night and collected the replacement today, as the new one was a few miles away I noticed a massive difference in the mpg. up to now it seems to of given me a further 60 miles on my tank range and I recon it could be greater than that :) Im also thinking that some of the fuel used was down tho the fact that the prop was worn......Problem I have is I bought this car because it was a 4x4 but I use it on the road and really want to attatch the new prop, but the savings on the fuel is a considerable amount so I was wondering if there is a device that I could select 2 wheel drive for my normal trip to work n stuff and then when needed I could select 4 wheel drive rather than taking the prop on and off each time, also I dont think the insurance would be happy with it off as I think its classed as a modification, and they would prob charge me more or wriggle out of a claim.

am running in mondo mode just now and tbh cant see any diffrence in mpg i do notice when i pull out at round about and the turbo come in that its just spins the tubes
 
I have a 04 plate 2.5 V6 sport. Im also considering leaving it off for a little while as the saving i get seems to be worth it. alltough if it snows I don't want to be laying on the floor in the cold trying to put it back on, or if I get the chance to go off roading, just thought there may be a device that I can put on to help

I'd be inclined to think there was something else causing the low mpg with the front prop fitted ;)

The device you're on about is fitted standard to series Landrovers ;) :p

As suggested maybe it could of been that the front prop was worn so bad that that could of been affecting the mpg, Ive not yet used a full tank either yet, I was getting about 23 mpg and apparently thats good for the car I have, on things Ive read lots of people struggle to get 20. So Im going to wait a few days and find out for certain before re attaching the prop so I can compare, if its just a mile or two extra I think I will just put it back on as the whole idea of getting this was to have a 4x4 so I dont get stuck

You should do the VCU torque test too, just to be sure it's not that.

I agree. Excellent vehicles with all the knobs, levers and bits to play with.

2X4 or 4X4 as you wish:D

But Series don't have the power to spin their wheels on take off from traffic lights or scare me sh*tless on exiting wet roundabouts like a 2WD Freelander does. :(

You have something else that needs fixing, I'm afraid.

I couldn't tolerate a 2WD Freelander except as a temporary measure, whatever slight mpg savings were to be made.

Safety is more important.

I second this most emphatically.

In 2WD my Freelander has **** for grip and I often get wheelspin on roundabouts and wet junctions. I don't drive all that hard either. I've hated it but I simply don't have the cash for new tyres and VCU yet :(.
 
Don't really see the point in running the freelander in 2wd purely for economy reasons, why not just sell it and get something more fuel efficient??

My '99 1.8 petrol has managed 33-34 mpg on couple of 320 mile round trips over the last couple weeks, in 4wd, not too bad. Not sure what I get around town, never really bothered to check but guess high 20's?
 
I tend to leave my prop and vcu on for winter months, then come spring remove the lot.... as you say saves a fortune in fuel,just slightly embarasing when at country shows in the summer and you get stuck in the damp mud.....LOL :pound:

I cant make my mind up. It is better to have 4x4, of course but rarely essential in my world - I much prefer how she drives as a 2 wheel, though cant say I've ever noticed much difference in mpg. Was embaressing a couple of winters ago when I hadnt reinstalled prop. Something else to ponder and clear that we would all vote for switchable if it wasa vailable.
