Right heres the deal. I'm 17 got myself a defender and am still learning the basics. So. Bear with me.

When you look at a propshaft it has couplings on the end.

The one near the gear box that end. I've taken off the propshaft and now need to get the bolts off. These won't come off without a big bolt being undone. Now this bolt won't undo. It has a plastic cap in the middle and a blue lining. This bolt wont budge and i'm scared to do anything too forcefull incase I break anything...

any ideas on how to get this bolt off

Gareth

do you think the average 17 year old will know what a pair of stillsons looks like ?

1) I'm not an average 17 year old. I bought a defender so no need to jump to conclussions. 2 i'm about to start 2 year mechanization at college. and 3 I don't have a nanny.

Now. I'm looking for help guys come on. You all started somewhere

Sorry mate. Just getting in a real fit about this. As it's my only way to get around. And yeah they call it Mechanization but it's basically machinery in agriculture.

believe it or not your question has already been answered above

i was just wondering why you needed to undo it

The blue stuff you can see is the nylon "locking" part of the nut.
You will have to stop the flange turning and just get a long breaker bar and some brute force to undo it. I doubt you could apply enough force to break anything before the nut started to come loose.
Technically you should also use a new nyloc nut when you put the flange back on.
Or you could just use the old nut and some thread lock. All at your own risk of course.

Hey Gareth,
Most unlikely unless you're behind the wheel... it's a Defender right :D

You're much more likely to break the socket set / spanners. Oh and your knuckles
I also recommend that you download the Rave workshop manual so you can read the procedures and so on. It's a very big file, which you then burn to a CD to use. You can also download th eparts catalogue they use in the dealership, just an old version. Here is the link to the Rave manual

By the way, I agree those bolts need replacing. If you cant shift the big nut, reassemble and ensure the flange surfaces are both clean. It should be the friction between the flanges that creates the linkage not the side of the bolts against the holes of the propshaft. Clearly they are worn down so don't over tourque them.

Good luck & keep taking the stick:D

Not worth the risk IMO!!!!
I had a bearing replaced in my 'box and the 'specialist gearbox company' re-used the old Nylock  this resulted in the prop detatching itself after comparatively VERY few miles and whacking the underside of the Landy and gobbing a boxful of oil all over the bloody road!! A stupid O' clock trip home on the recovery truck and hassle getting the company responsible to put it right again. Use a new nylock every time!!!

I would replace the output shaft seal whilst the flange is off as well :)

If i remember rightly put the diff lock on,
Pull the handbrake on as swing on the nut with the tool buster said :)

Good Luck, you'll need it :D
