This weekend I pulled off the prop shaft and was hoping to change over the VCU . Got the prop off and the rear prop off the VCU however the front wouldn't budge! After several hours I managed to get it to release from the VCU but I had caused some damage to the universal joint in the process. As a precaution I have decided to replace the prop itself with a new one.

So my question is this, obviously there are metal strips welded onto the prop to balance it so does it matter where each prop is put back onto the VCU does this effect the balance as a whole? I made the unfortunate discovery that the marks I made on the props to get them aligned correctly have since rubbed off.

May be a silly question as the props are balanced independently in the factory but I have heard some stories of vibrations over 50mph when others have changed VCU's so am wondering if this is because the props were not put back on in the same position they were taken off?

Thanks

The props can go back onto the VCU anyway as it makes no difference. I always mark the diff flanges so the front and rear can be bolted back in the same place. I don't think this is necessary but I'm old school!!

Are the uj's not available?

Changed two and never had a balance problem despite not caring about the marks.

Someone did buy the UJs separately- I read it recently..

Not sure if the flanges or yokes are available separately.
The U.J. kits comprising of the Spider (Cross), Bearing cups and Circlips are easily available and not too expensive.
If you are just replacing the U.J. kit the shaft does not need rebalancing providing the parts go back in the same orientation as before dismantling.

Replacement joints re available for a few quid each.

No point worrying about marking the splines etc for re-assembly as the first few corners you go round will make the VCU slip and nothing will be aligned any more. Its designed this way and there is no need to worry about balance.

Cheers for the feedback all and a very good point from Dave21478 I hadn't thought about that.

Will get it back together this weekend.
