Afternoon All,

Forgive my inactivity for years but been more of an infrequent reader than regular poster, my FL2 has been mostly trouble free for 120,000 miles plus so have remained a little smug....until now.

Anyhow.........can someone please tell me if Freelander 2 2.2 diesel manual cars have a common size/fit prop' through all model years? Looking to fit an '09 prop' onto my '07 but they have different LR part numbers. I have searched relentlessly but am close to giving up getting an answer on this, anyone know at all?

Hi I think at 09MY the haldex changed to Gen4 from Gen 3

I suspect the change in driveshaft is something to do with this and also they changed from two bearing mounts to one.

If it was cheap enough I'd try it personally

This prop' i'm looking at has 2 bearings/mounts ie: it's a 3 piece unit as is mine, looks the same in every way but I was put off as when looking at new props it shows a change in part number from 09 onwards...I have seen a line drawing of what appears to be a two piece prop with just the one bearing/carrier and that's definitely not the same as this one I'm thinking on so it might work.

Just found dimensions of different prop options on the Britpart website and it looks like '09 onwards is 219cm overall, earlier models seem to be 211cm long so looks like it 'aint a goer..........shame. If anyone knows of breakers that might be worth a try please post it up.

Looking into it a bit more then there is a vibration damper on the early ones and not on the later ones.

Maybe this accounts for the difference in length?

Not sure if you can remove the vibration damper and what effect it will have if you run the later prop

I have no idea, but it's the later one's that are longer?! you mentioning a difference in the Haldex units at least accounts for the different part numbers (helped a lot did that) so while I was hopeful, I now think I have to look for the right one. What with a possible DMF/gearbox issue grumbling away too I am trying to fix it as cheaply as I can so not wanting to take risks.

Appreciate your input on this.......

The later ones don't have a vibration damper from what I can work out so would explain why the later props are longer.

Also are you sure it is DMF or gearbox causing the grumbling as FL2s transmit a lot of noise up the prop from wheel bearings, rear diff pinion bearings so worth checking all those as best you can before condemning the expensive parts.

It's a long story TD.....but shortened down I had a problem with the car, one afternoon I heard a bang from underside (might/might not be connected to issues) then a metallic spinning noise from NSF, 'clink' when on/off power and gearchange felt/sounded wrong...took it to an independent and after going over the car they could only find a worn NSF drive shaft, replaced but this didn't fix the problem and after taking back for them to further investigate they just didn't know what it was for sure, (metallic spinning noise from front near side of engine, vibration, gear change sounded/felt sloppy/worn feeling, clink type noise coming off/applying power remained). Took it to two gearbox specialists, one said pinion bearings worn in gearbox, one said prop shaft. Took it to another who suggested flywheel/clutch issue (which I tended to agree with) so took it back to one of the specialist gearbox garages who looked at it further and are adamant the prop is worn and need this done first before they can take it further. Just to point out I have heard the prop from underneath when the car was on a ramp with the wheels spun up and the rear bearing was very noisy and the front section had loads of play in it, this hopefully is causing the 'clink' when on/off power. Ref' the flywheel/clutch it is rattling a bit at tick over but disappears on depressing the clutch. When driving the 'metallic spinning' noise isn't apparent with the clutch depressed but you can hear the prop. This really is the short version and has been a nightmare to try and get resolved....it's like there are two or possibly three things going south that unless stripped right down is hard to pinpoint, the prop' is on it's way so once done might make diagnosing further a bit simpler.

Rear dif' bearings done by LR a while back, know what they sound like when wearing and sure they are OK.

It has been a real pain.......all told seven/eight (at a rough guess) garages/LR independents/gearbox specialists just can't be sure what the problem is, they all think different. Plan is to get a decent prop' on there which takes that out of the equation. Prop, gearbox pinion bearings, transfer box, flywheel/clutch, drive shaft, even had the crank mentioned so once the prop is fitted I hope it can be pinned down. I know the prop is worn and needs replacing but I also know it isn't going to cure much, just take the lash out of the drive so we then know that isn't masking the main problem. Managed to find a lowish mileage one at a breakers to collect tomorrow then will take it to the gearbox guys to fit and leave with them to further investigate.
