Problems starting and temp gauge issue after work on instrument wiring

Are you sure the starter is re-energising or is it just still running?
Aren't some glow plug relays timed, as in they stay on for certain amount of time even if engine is running.?
It's definitely re-energising. If you remember, initially I thought it was something else.belt driven, but it's definitely the starter restarting. Not a good sound to hear (or smell to smell!). Removing the relay and using the jumper solves it.

I'm suspicious that the problem I have with the gauges is somehow linked. Ground cables are getting energised?!

Don’t know the defender but is the thin wire on solenoid still getting a continuous 12v after you release the ignition switch from cranking
I initially thought it was the white/red cable from the ignition switch getting re-energised. However, that's not the case. The ground (black) cable is getting the juice and causing the relay to re-activate.

The red/white relay trigger wire stays non live and the corresponding earth is live?
Maybe the relay is faulty, shorting out triggering itself, possible maybe?

Hi, yes, that's correct: the red/white relay trigger wire stays non live and the corresponding earth is live
I've taken the relay out completely and am using a jumper cable with a momentary switch across the output terminals (live cable in, solenoid cable out) direct to the starter.

I'm wondering if there is a bad ground somewhere causing ground cable(s) to be energised. Is this possible?
