Hi everyone
We have a 1999 freelander 1.8 petrol ,recently we have had some issues starting it ,sometimes its starts and runs perfectly ,other times it won't start it will turn over but not fire up, We have replaced the coil, dis cap, rotary arm ,leads , fuel pump, crank shaft sensor and exhaust and it is still having problems starting. We have just had it put on a comp at a landrover specialist and they told us the engine is on its way out that it is running at 200 degrees (which is not possible) ,yet we have had no indication it is over heating or that the head is going ,the head was done at 60k it is now at 96k ,anybody have any idea what would make the computer tell us this ? We don't actually think the car is finished !! Also when we called the AA out they said that the sparks were flooded with fuel and this was why it wasn't starting (although this could be wrong this is the 3rd different diagnosis we have from the AA!!)
Thanks in advance

im a freelander novice, but you dont mention anything about trying new spark plugs? or perhaps HT leads?

iv mainly pulled motorbikes apart and from my experience daft things like a dirty air filter have caused dodgy start up probs

just a couple of my thoughts

my sis give me a car once.

the garage had diagnosed a bent valve

i had it for two minutes afore i took the air filter out and it ran like a dream :)

hi , all new ht leads and plugs !!! beginning to think setting fire to it would be the best option now have spent over £800 on it in the last 3 weeks , filters are changed regularly and it is serviced regularly as well ! about to cut my losses and scrap it !

Mine struggles to start if I press the accelerator while turning the ignition key - even just a light press seems to quickly flood it ...so now I leave my foot clear and it fires up a lot better.
Blocked fuel filter or cat maybe ..are the gasses getting away ok?

found by using the search button about a freelander with overfuelling problems, hope this helps

Well guess what.......I've fixed it!!!! Wooohooo!

Here's what I finally done......

Changed the fuel pressure reg in the pump for a 3 bar one,

changed the lambda sensor for a NGK one and changed the cat for a better quality one. When I changed the 3.6 bar reg for the 3 bar one it didn't make much of a difference to emissions, still goes well though with no flat spots. so the conclusion there is it's not really to do with fuel pressure (but might help on mpg a bit so will report back later on it's mpg). So I was out of ideas really until I done some more research on lambda sensors, and that cheaper ones can be faulty out the box from new. Symptoms are starting on .16v and rising whithin seconds to .96 to 1.1v what made me think it was faulty in the end was the fact it stays on .9v after the engine is switched off until the sensor cools down.....had to change the cat again due to it giving up after getting drowned in petrol from the engine running so rich and killing it! so there you go. Fit a good quality NGK lambda sensor and maybe a cat and job done!!!! Thanks to everyone for their input and ideas and hope this helps other people to keep their freelanders on the road a bit longer :)

Hi , yes thats all ok it has a new full exhaust system ..i never press accelerator upon turning ignition

Thanks , had a new lambda fitted but will check out which one it was and maybe change it ! if i don't set fire to it in the mean time !:smash:

Going back the the 200° question. There is no way as you say that the engine is running at 200° C but it's very likely to run at something around 200°F . So ether the garage have there machine set on the USA default which would be imperial. Or if it's set to a metric default then it's possible it's not picked up the temperature at all? so it's displaying an out of range temperature. One thing is certain it's not running at 200° C. As for the starting issues. Are you 100% sure the imobilizer is allowing the engine to run? And do you hear the fuel pump prime when the key is turned to ignition on?
