I’ve got a Freelander 2003 2.0 TD4 and it was starting to have problems getting into 1st and 2nd gear with a low biting point on the clutch. So I replaced the Master Cylinder and Slave Cylinder. Also the clutch pedal as that was broken. The clutch was fine according to a parts place even though it is a LUK clutch. But after replacing both Cylinders it was even worse getting into all gears. It was bleed repeatedly and all fluids topped up. But the problem is still there. Sometimes it gets into all gears other times you really have to force into all it’s gears. Sometimes it works when it’s cold other times it works when it’s warmed up.

I’ve taken it now to two different Landrover specialist and they don’t know what is wrong with it. They said the Master Cylinder might be faulty but the dealer where I got the part from said this can’t be the case as they are sealed units and can’t let air into the system. They have suggested changing the Clutch as it’s not original Landrover part, but I’ve been told this still might not make any difference. Then they have suggested then changing the Fly Wheel, see is that makes any difference and if not it’s a new gearbox!!!!! But none of this is a guarantee that it will make any difference. But why does it go into gear fine sometimes and then suddenly it’s so stuff you really have to force it in?

So if I was to go down the route of replacing the clutch and Flywheel would original Landrover parts be my best option? I’ve been told that the worse thing I didn’t do was to have the clutch changed even though it was fine as it’s an LUK clutch and this might, be only might, cause problems. So I don’t really want to replace any of the parts unless they are original Landrover parts?

Any advice, solutions, help would be grateful as it’s turning into a money pit that no one know what is wrong with it and if it’s going to be taken apart again I want to make sure this time the right parts and brands are put onto it.

I would make sure that the clutch arm is going full travel, is it better if you pump the clutch pedal?

yes, I'm sure the clutch is going full travel and it makes no difference if you pump the clutch. Also, when you put the clutch pedal flat on the floor and the Freelander is stationary on the flat it creeps forward.
