Problems after changing gearbox oil

I changed the oil in the gearbox (R380) and transfer box (LT230) this week, finished it yesterday and today noticed it was difficult to change from 2nd to 3rd, but 4th the 3rd was ok.

Could changing the oil have done something? Seems a bit of a coincidence. Disco has done about 97k miles

What oil did you use.

Don't worry it wasn't olive oil!! It was MTF94

just to confirm you stuck ep90 in the lt230

give the mtf a bit longer and see if it improves.

No for once I looked in the book and used 75w-90 GL5 in transfer box and same in axles.

I have always used EP90 in gearbox and axles then ATF in transfer boxes but thought I'd try doing it properly for once

According to Haynes the gearbox takes MTF94 and transfer box AND diffs take 75w90, is this wrong?

no 75w/90 or 80w/90 ep90 etc are fine , is it haerd to select first and reverse

You had me worried there as I have always used EP90 and ATF so this is new.

I have not noticed any difference with first or reverse, just very notchy into 3rd from 2nd. If I change very slowly its ok, but on a normal gear change there is a lump. Seemed fine before, so that's what made me think it was something to do with these new oils

you could refill with atf see if its better

I have got a tub of ATF DIII I could use, would that be ok in a manual gearbox ?

I thought of that but it's too much of a coincidence that it's started the day after the gearbox oil was changed?

as far as i understand it, it is just multigrade.

at 40c the oil is 75, thinner when cold so it gets around easier.
at 100c it's 90.

so at operating temps ep90 and the multigrade are the same viscosity.

IMO if U used ep90 in the R380 for longer period that box is gone, it has not enough viscosity for that box and it's too thick, that's why they give only dexron as alternative as it's thinner... being already worn go back on ep90 maybe it will change easyer but not for long, it's not the first R380 which I see ''dead'' due to the wrong oil, these boxes are very squeamish on oils, I didn't find MTF94 local so went for 'alternatives' recommended by oil ''specialists'', drained out two kind of so said similar oils before I bit the bullet and ordered Mtf94 from UK cos the gearchange was crap.... I couldn't believe what difference the oil can make... I can change with two fingers even at -20*c now, for me the statement from RAVE is not exaggerated at all:

yep and won't flow through the trans cooler

Looks like MTF94 is ok then. The only thing I didn't do is check the levels after a drive - which i'll do now, but wouldn't have thought it would drop that much
