Problem removing oil seal collar!

Hi, I'm in the process of taking apart my gearbox to try and sort out a 1st and 2nd selection issue. I am stuck. I got transmission case seperated no probs but I have spent a fair few hours today trying to remove the oil seal collar which was the next step and have had no luck. I don't have a puller and I'm stuck in France and don't know where to get one. Do you think I have any chance without one (bloody tight!!) if no and I have to try and get one what sort of puller, is it a bearing puller that would do it? The collar has a grove around it about 1/2mm wide and same deep to take some kind of puller?

Also, a long shot I know but does anyone out there know if France has any chain stores like halfords etc?

Thanks in advance, Mark

depends how tight some are real tight ,it should come off first, have you got main case off and seen fault it will come off without rear housing but you wont be able to change much until rear collar is off ,you will also need puller to remove 5th gear with synchro hub, some do it this way

Hi jamesmartin

Yeah it is real tight! Good to know it doesn't have to come off to have a look inside main case because that way i can have a look inside and hopefully see problem and get the parts I need ordered along with a puller. I'll seperate main case tomorrow then. Also I still have bell housing attatched to other end, are the 19mm bolts that attatch this to the gearbox always really tight as haven't undone these yet as seem impossible to budge but if this is normal I'll give it some real welly tomorrow (well try anyway) and get it off. Just worried about damaging bolt heads. Also the small fragments of metal were coming out of main gearbox plug NOT transfer box plug as I said, I cocked up there and told you wrong. So you are probably right it probably is my sync thats broke up in main box. This should be obvious and starring at me when I open up main case I hope? Nothing came out of transfer box exept clean oil (good). Thanks once again.

bell housing bolts will come off allright though they are tight, and you need 32 mm socket for l/s 5th gear ,you must not pull on 5th gear dog teeth directly ,although sometime 5th and synchro will prise off depends how tight synchro is and also try and keep synchro hub together mark inner and outer to ensure they can go back on same splines if they do seperate

OK, bit more brute force on bellhoue bolts then. I'm also pretty sure I have a 32mm socket. I've seen pics where the 5th and synchro were prized off, but I won't try and force mine too much, should have a puller by then anyway. Thanks for tip on "keep synchro hub together mark inner and outer to ensure they can go back on same splines if they do seperate[/quote]" I didn't know that. Cheers Mark

have a look here you need to look at lt77 and r380 as some tools are common so arent shown in lt77 http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...sg=AFQjCNE-61NTVtnulOBmgJc37EqvouosCA&cad=rja

Thanks. I have just sent you a pm jamesmartin as I finally got into gearbox today and took a few photos, which I'm hopeing you may be kind enough to have a quick look at for me? I can't manage to upload photo's on here, but know how to put them in a normal email from my email address. I have explained as best I can in the pm. Thanks Mark

Hi james

Thanks for looking at them, I hear what your saying re the bearings etc and to be honest I'm not totally surprised. The problem I have is cost, I would love to put a recon unit in or at least replace most of the internals but just physicaly don't have the money at the mo, would be several months away. It's a huge gamble but I will have to buy the minimum parts for now and fingers crossed and then if it goes for a while and then packs up I'll bite the bullet and take box back out and if I've got the money get a recon unit in hopefully via yourself. For now what would you guess would be the minimum, a new rev gear for mainshaft obviously, and I guess complete synchro assembly for that hopefully to enable me to get 1st/2nd as well. As I say 3rd,4th and 5th were at least working for now anyway. Cheers Mark

have you got my pm?

Hi jamesmartin

I did pm you back last night the following message:

You probably didn't get it martin here it is again in this message.

Regards Mark

i would check out cost of used known good one 1st/2nd syncro hub is £60 on its own, which might be significant if you have to buy pullers etc ,looks like a g suffix , if input shaft has 22 teeth you can convert disco box using your input shaft, selector shaft ,and 5th gear synchro hub and rear case

OK, I'll have a look around and see what I can find, probably will try a used one for now then. Anything after that and I'll be in contact to see if you can sort out a recon unit or total rebuild as should be back in UK then.

Thanks, Mark

no it doesnt:) it has 21 or 22 and front layshaft has 34 with 21 and 33 with the 22,21 teeth = 50a defender only ,22 = 56a parts interchangeable with disco
