Problem Already with my td5 gs 2

Only got the car today and it looks like problems already.
Help any one who can.
It’s a 1999 TD5.
The problem is, when travelling at 60mph in 5th the temp gauge sits perfectly in the middle and the engine is fine but when you want to speed up a little the problems start. It will accelerate but the temp gauge follows at about the same sort of speed until its just below the red hot and then the engine loose all power until the temp has dropped again and then its fine again. Please help.

First off try a new coolant temperature sensor. £15. Mine was sticking in the central/normal position and I was losing all power. If the sensor is faulty or it shows the temperature is too high it limits your power. Fitted new sensor and all is ok. Also check for diesel in your coolant. If your vehicle HAS overheated at any point it blows your fuel cooler. They then pour diesel into your coolant and that has the same effect. A new fuel cooler is £230. There is a guy on ebay selling em at £15. I have just bought one today. They are the old style ones but at over £200 cheaper I int gonna complain. I will let you know what they are like when I get mine and fit it on saturday.
 
I have just looked at your profile. Your vehicle is an early 1999 TD5, as is mine. I think you will find that your vehicle has nylon head dowels and as a result they melt when they get hot and allow the head shift ever so slightly causing the effect of Headgasket failure without it actually failing.

Mine was the same. I had sniff and compresion tests come up and all was ok. I too was limited to 60mph to stop myself blowing up. I did 3000 miles and kept trying tgo tell myself all was gonna be fine and it wasn't. I have now had the head gasket done, fitted a new temp sensor and am about to fit a second replacement fuel cooler.

When the head was removed there were clear signs (black marks around the bores) showing where the head was shifting. If you bought it from a garage and have a warranty on it then get the head gasket done on warranty and get the uprated steel dowels fitted while you are at it.
 
I have just looked at your profile. Your vehicle is an early 1999 TD5, as is mine. I think you will find that your vehicle has nylon head dowels warranty and get the uprated steel dowels fitted while you are at it.

Do you know when the steel dowels started to be fitted? Mine is year 2000.

I was just reading this thread on AULRO. One of the last posts mentions that using steel dowels in the earlier engines could cause problems. No idea why. Just thought I would point it out.
