Can i just say i used to have a lot of dealings with this engine and its probably the best engine in the world i would trust it anywhere! i must have driven 400,000 miles or more with these engines.

What other engine will go flat out under max load on a motor way for 6 straight hours in all conditions without any issues ??

or idle for 15 days straight 24hrs a day ? (generator)

run on old engine oil mixed with kerosine ?

still manage 50 mph with one piston removed on a 380 mile run ?

a V8 would simply boil over or have massive internal failure (been there 3 times)

200 / 300 tdi Don't like it although they are the second best well the 300 anyway the 200 was a kind of half arsed effort.

The hall of fame for his lump

Yes I do like the old 2.5 :) I have an ex disco 300 tdi going spare in my yard, however I still decided to spend about 200 quid giving my 12J a full rebuild :)

Lovely engines to work on, I enjoyed it a lot :)

I have one in my landy and it seems an intrepid, unstoppable engine. All be it at its own pace. It's surprised me a few times at the pay 'n' play sites.

If it was good enough for the British Army then you can't get a better recommendation than that!!

Spent many hours behind the wheel either on exercise or on Operational Tours.

Pretty easy fixable aswell. Even though you have to rag it to get a move on on roads off road it's quite good and it isn't an 'on the limit' engine which makes for good reliability. Field fixable aswell

Any engine where you can fix electrical problems with a hammer (no joke - had a temp sender with a bad rivet) works fine for me.

Only objection I have to it is its leisurely top speed in a 110, but if one cultivates the proper frame of mind that is entirely tolerable.

Compared to its older stablemate (the 2.25D - worst engine I've ever owned in a Rover!) it's a quantum leap.

Tell you what mine has a weird habit,

When I first drive it it's a bit sluggish. Then I stop, turn it off and leave it a couple of hours. When I get back in it's noticeably more free revving and does seem a bit top end faster. I thought it was just me but a couple of people have commented now

Any ideas?

Hi, newish here but after finally getting my 90 running, new cam belt, glows, filters etc must say what a cracking motor to have a go at! Just got to do a knackered water pump now, but I can't remember the order I have to put the bolts back in. Oh and one bolt snapped so I got to drill it out or tap a stud & nut in.
Any help highly appreciated, diesel

Just replaced my cracked hotspots bolted everything back together and it sounds like my timing is out, it seems to chuff back through the manifold with a slight knock, any help would be appreciated, could it be fuel pump? Tappetts & valve clearances? Injector?
