He Guys and gals......... I know this is probably something really trivial but it bugs the crap out of me!!!!!

Is there no warning for when you leave the lights on?

I drive with the lights on during the day when im on the motorway and always forget when i get home. I would have thought there would have been a warning of some sort and was wondering if mine wasnt working!

Cheers guys and gals

Rob.

No there is not.

It's impossible, as how would it work with the headlight delay?

My 1999 (4.6 Thor) beeps at you if you leave the side or headlights on and try to turn off the ignition. As far as I can remember you get the message "Headlight delay" for headlights on or "sidelights on" for sidelights on. I vaguely remember seeing a setting for it in the BECM too.

My DSE does the same as above, if you leave the lights on and turn the ignition off you get a "Headlight Delay" message, a bleep and the lights go off themselves after so many seconds.

Had second thoughts on this ..... this is if you then switch off the lights after the ignition ..... not sure if they go off themselves if you don't turn the light switch off.

The lights operate as per your second paragraph, stupidly they will stay on if you leave the headlight switch in the on position after removing the key.

Yes there's combo of events with the ignition and headlight switch that either ends up with a headlights on message when the door opens) or headlight delay when the ignition is turned off which gives you about 30 seconds of headlights before they turn off - can't remember what the various combinations are! Strangely I can when I'm sitting in the car!

From memory, pretty sure on my 96 DT there is a warning if the headlights are switched on when you remove the ignition key (or is it when you open the driver's door?) but no warning if only the side lights are on. If you switch the headlights off after removing the key you get the headlamp delay message.

I get a triple beep and "PARK LIGHTS" warning as I open the door.

On a 98 dt
Sidelights on ignition key out door open= beep+ "park lights" message
Dipped on ignition key out door open = beep+ "lights on" message
Light in any state key in door open = beep+ "key in ignition" message

well i guess its just one of those little quirks on a p38!!!!!!! thanks lads! Im going to think about some sort of buzzer or something i can hook up.......... maybe like the system on a ford that just buzzes when you open the door if the lights are left on, will hook it up to the light switch and the door switch without going through the headlight delay. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

Yes, the lights are switched by MOSFETS in the BECM, friggin with the wiring could lead you into a world of pain.

I think its worth you going into BECM and setting Daylight Running Lights to ON. You then eliminate the problem entirely, you never need to use the headlight switch unless (a) you specifically want the delay when you park somewhere (b) are in some situation where you want the lights on and the ignition off (c) want to activate main beams. Which reminds me, there's an added bonus, when you flash main beams with headlight switch on it doesn't flash but just switches to mains and you have to pull the lever again to go back to dips. With DRL and the headlight switch off, the flash works normally.

Sorry Rash, that's wrong, pull the stalk half way to flash, pull all the way to switch from dip to main or vice versa.
The design is bad, as with so much of the P38, there is a detent at the half pull but it's so weak it's hard to detect it.
It's in the owners manual.:)
