Prat sparked battery - now, weird stuff

A kind 'friend' accidentally touched wrench to metal whilst refitting a fully charged battery, resulting in sparks. Now, the D reg 90 won't start and when the key is turned it takes ages before the initial dashboard lights come on. Add to that if I attempt to turn it over the dashboard lights go out.

In order that I can visit the local car accessory shop today/tomorrow anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Has your 'friend' fully tightened the battery posts?

Yes - I checked them myself after removing the good Samaritan out of the way. To make sure I re-attached them, checking for corrosion etc

New battery required I would say ... can you borrow one to make sure?

you might of shorted the starter solenoid, or voltage regualator

a lesson in doing earth last when fitting,and first in removing,i would try trickle charging first before new
