All back together again.
And running smoothly
I gave the engine a total examination and my conclusion is previous engine damage
I De coked all the head and valves which were quite heavy. Changed all the valve
Seals and re ground valves. When I cleaned the piston heads I found valve imprints on 2 pistons. Which totally adds to my theory The cylinder bores were in very good order Which was nice.
So with minor caution I put it all back together again and took a chance. had a
Scare when I started it up. I forgot
The exhaust clamp. Ha
Ha. But it ran sweet. Test drive is
Now complete and it has been running non stop For about 2 hours. No over heat and no noise to worry about. And no leaks which is always a bloody good job.
Let’s see where it now takes me.

It is sounding like someone before got the timing wrong and then reset it, perhaps they even had the head off and just whacked valves back straight.
Nothing surprises me any more as to the fixes people do.
Someone I know bought a VW Toerag from a car dealer 200mls away the other day and drove it home. Took it to our local garage for a check for a suspect coolant leak. I was there for MOT and the Garage owner showed me the cause. A heater hose down the back of the V6 engine had been repaired with what looked like tiger seal.:eek::( .

Yeah I know. How can someone see the valve strike. And just re use the bent rods Surely they knew it was gonna come back at some time. All the gaskets were missing and fixed with silicone based gasket Everywhere. Shame for the person who paid for a repair
Take the money and run perhaps. I don’t know.

So glad you actually found the cause, yes Paul, I agree 100% with you, obviously they put it together with bent Push Rods :(

Makes me mad, you should check out my Discovery 2 "athon" project thread ;).................

Aside from the jobs I knew needed doing such as some welding and mech issues, I am now at the stage I'm sorting out a whole heap of unseen bodges that our local muppet garage did for the PO.

Had I known it was them that had worked on this vehicle before I got it, I would have run a mile ;)
Infamous so they are.

Still it's getting there now ;)

Thanks for all your encouragement.
I’m no mechanic. Haven’t taken a head off since college. I mean engine. Notkill bill
Style. I’ll check out your project.
