power steering (or lack of in flood water)

Has anyone experienced this as it is new to me and did not affect my Toyota Landcruiser. I have only had the 1997 Disco1 300Tdi for 2 weeks now and been out putting it through it's paces in the lake district this weekend, but when I go throuh deep water/flooded lanes etc it is as if the power steering shuts off and I need to be jeff capes to move the steering! Quite unnerving when you are halfway around a bend and feel like you are going to go straight on! I even had it today going through a deep puddle as I turned onto my work approach road. Any ideas if it could be a possible electrical connection/short and if so where do I look for it at? Thanks in advance

look at the auxillary belt ,water is making pulley slip on pas pump pulley ,a new belt and tensioner might help

Mine does the same when the belt gets wet but its overdue for replacement anyway. Squeals a bit then dries off and steerings back to normal

This happened to me yesterday, can you please update if the new belt works.

it wont if they dont get it tight enough

Thanks for all the responses I shall get a new belt and fit on friday. As I have only had it a fortnight I am slowly working through list of little jobs and am fitting De-cat exhaust and blanking EGR. As it shall be up on ramps I will no doubt have good access to do job. I must admit I thought a belt was slipping as when I turn lights on I get the familiar whine/squeak like a belt slipping.

Mine does the same. Cant hear it slip though. Might throw another belt on at the weekend

Mine did this also on Saturday night,was a bit weird,I must remember it is not a Saab

my old disco 200 was diabolical in the wet with its silly single belts,
so i fitted an old hard plastic ford mondeo undertray,
cut down a bit, but goes from just behind the front bumper
with a bit cut out for the steering box, and touches the sump wi some pipe foam on its edge as to not rattle.
its all held in place with 4 BIG black cable ties around each chassis rail.
(ex BT pole fitters)

I can splash about with ease now and me stupid belts dont get wet.

the cable ties are unlockable if I need to get under the injin.
(which i will need to soon ..)

I thought about doing something like that but isn't it a bit of a mud trap? Good idea though, I might still look into it. Any pics?

Is the pulley easy to replace? Tensioner too?

As it would appear that water is going to be an ongoing issue locally though I best make as good as possible

sorry mate, I dont do pictures :nopics: yes I know - but..

my thinking is, the undershield is covering most of "the underside"
being tied to chassis rails, just behind front bumper, and long as I could get it so it touches the sump.

just lay underneath your landie, and you see it all (in the grey stuff)

I got a 200 chunky mate
poxy belts, but it works now..
(apart from my latest "help" problems)

Doing belts this weekend. I think between swopping engines and various leaks and temp sensor changing involving leaks I think my belts have gotten badly oiled up.

chuck a handful of dry cement on `em going round when there oily,
it`ll either work,
or stop your engine...

I was still young enough to go outside and just do an engine swap...

I spends a lota time now just thinking about doing stuff,
building meself up to doing it...

good on yer tho` fer just getting on with it....proppa landrover thinking that ..

Changed my belt at lunchtime and already its stopped squealing when on full lock so happy days. Also my fan belt has stopped its squealing which was really starting to grip my ****. Now I just gotta find a puddle on my way home and see if the problems sorted

now, hand on heart, I told a few lies it seems here :doh:

when I had nuther look from the top at my antisplashy bolton ford bit,
the cut out was for the front diff or so it looks like from a "gentlemans" view..

not laying on the floor for nuther look tday either,
makes me old head spin it do :bowl:

I added a warmed can of wynns anti noise makey yor engine betta stuff,
and took it fer a ride round town t see if it works..
still got me rattle, but a nicer quieter rattle now...
as it says on the tin -
treats 4 litres of oil,
better getta bigga can I spose,




or order a head gaskit seat, bolts, & stuff soon....

My Disco does this as well. Even after I had fitted a new belt and new tensioner. There is no indication of the belt slipping. Thoughts?
