am about the replace my automatic oil and also seen I've got a new bottle of power steering fluid on my shed shelf

so as I've replaced every other fluid might as well change that at the same time

couldn't find anything in the haynes manual only about topping up

have any of u change the pas oil plse

just thought of undoing the pipe that's on the pas pump and allowing it to drain , put it up on axle stands , turn the wheels left to right to try and get all the oil out

then fill it up , turning then wheels to each side, until no more air comes out , then start it up and do the same whilst checking the fill level

is that the about way of replacing the pas oil plse , will remove the reservoir and give that a good clean

once that's done every single oil will have been replaced

RAVE doesn't specify a PSF change at all. I've been thinking about it for a while too as mine's all black. What about just sucking it out of the reservoir and refilling every service? That way you get a gradual renewal without disturbing too much. Cheating, I know, but I have a strong ain't-broke-don't-fix-it instinct about this...
 
Just a reminder, you should not run a hydraulic system without oil in it even for the shortest of periods, take the feed pipe of the rack and run into a container, and top up with new oil as you go, might be a two person job
 
thks about not running the engine without the pas full, some web sites say u can but i always thought it was a no, no

got a few thin tubes and a manual pump so should be able to suck out quite abit and pull off the bottom hose

but will ensure that any bleed nipples etc can be u done first before touching anything , or if they look bad will leave it alone

it's the only oil left in the entire car that I havent changed, lol

it does look pretty black to be honest

imagine though the oil would maybe deteriate over time , the car is 13 years old and can't see any record of it being changed

will have a good study of it over the weekend and access wise

better put some plastic sheeting down I think to protect the drive way, lol

will report back of any problems etc and if it makes any difference

PSF fluid is easy to change. There are several methods. The gradual one mentioned above is the easiest and least messy. It pretty effective to as the tank holds around 50% of the fluid.
The way I do it is more messy but does change most of the fluid.
First I stuck out all the fluid from the tank, replacing it with fresh, filled right to the top.
The I disconnect the bottom pipe at the cooler behind the grill. The fluid with flow from both open ends. The tank will empty into the system, replacing the old fluid with fresh. Keep watching the tank as you need to reattach the pipe before the tank is completely emptied. Once you have rejoined the cooler pipe, fill the tank with fresh fluid to the level marker this time.
Start the engine and turn the steering from lock to lock a couple of times, this purges any air out of the system. Check the level again and admire your nice red fluid.

going to just suck out the fluid and change it over time , don't fancy getting it everywhere as knowing my luck I would spray it all over the drive , lol

can then just change it a few times till clear

looks nice and black

Yes you can suck out the reservoir contents, refill, start the engine for a minute or so, suck it out, refill, run the engine and so on. Doing this 3 or 4 times will be sufficient to replace most fluid in the system.

thks mate

just don't fancy spraying it everywhere as I know that would be just my luck , lol

saw the two pipes on the reservoir and also thought if I could detatch it from the bracket easy enough along with the pipes can then at least clear the black junk out of it

then it will be nice and clean as i fill and refill the reservoir

That's what I done , Got a 1 litre bottle of PSF and sucked out some then replaced with new , used car for a while then changed again until I used the whole bottle .
 
Just replaced my old power steering pump on my 2.0 TD4 with a brand new oem one plus a new auxilliary drive belt. I used Dexron ATF VI for the reservoir but I now have a significant groan coming from the pump which increases with rpm. Have i used the wrong fluid ? I did bleed the system as per the book but the power steering isnt much different and this groan has suddenly appeared. Ive checked the belt and it seems fine on every pulley, the npise is defintely coming from the new pump so im a bit confused and worried ive done something wrong and help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure it's backwards compatible, What colour is the new fluid? I use Carlube ATF-U in my PS and auto box. This is Dii, iii, and iv compatible and works just fine. Oh and it's cherry red in colour.
 
The new fluid is cherry red and was told its compatible but im thinking its not so today im gomna get it out and swap it for D2 or D3, ive also noticed there is turbulence in the reservoir when its running which could be air so im wondering if its too thin and causing aereation ?
 
If the fluid is cherry red then I reckon it's fine. The reservoir is designed to centrifuge the fluid, so spinning out any air in the system. Most of the air comes out after a couple of lock to lock sweeps. However the remaining air will be dispelled over the next few miles.

Strange noise needs investigation though.
 
Swapped oil from D6 to D2 no different so put the old pump back on and hey presto the noise from the pump has gone and the steering seems to be ok so all in all it looks like I have a brand new duff pump from Britcar in the UK and somehow I seemed to have cured my orignal fault which I think may have been the belt as I put a new auxilliary belt on as well as a new pump. The new pump is going back for a refund and I will see how the steering goes o ver the news few weeks. Thanks so much for the help and advice it is very much appreciated
 
there is an instruction in the FL2 repair manual.
Basically disconnect the return and extend to a catch container. Attache and seal a 4 liter funnel to the reservoir and fill.
Start the engine and rotate the steering whell lock to lock 3 times at approx 1 revolution every 5 seconds. then seal her (not sexist boys can to be girls now) up again.
