I just bought my first landrover freelander in December and now I'm having big problems with my steering. When I slow down as if to turn into a street or parking the power steering goes all stiff like it's no longer working. So far it seems this happens first thing in the morning on the school run when the car is cold. And so far I have been going slow enough to just stop and re start the car (which sometimes takes a few mins resting) I'm looking for help before I send it to the garage. Is it maybey something I'm doing or a common problem. It's an 03 plate bought to tow my horse box but I'm scared to drive it now.

I'd check your auxillary drive belts for correct tension. Basically as the engine turns it turns a belt that drives your power steering pump. If that belt snaps entirely then you'll lose the power steering and it gets really hard to turn the wheel. If its only doing it at low speeds i'd check the belt tension first then move onyo checking the pump itself if that doesnt fix it.

It would help to know what engine the car has. There's are different belt layouts between engines

2003 Freelander 1.8 .. according to profile info.

btw: at one point i overfilled the p.s. fluid reservoir
and noted the steering became harder on near-to-full-lock
the excess was syringed out ..
