Hi all new to this site but it seems the place to be if you own a Land Rover or Range Rover,

I have just converted my 1988 110 from the old petrol engine to a diesel and have put in a J12 n/a 2.5 diesel engine, and now want to do the power steering conversion, I have all the parts I think to do the job, but the only question I have! is DO I need to change the crank pulley to a twin? Or will the single pulley work? I think I will have to mount the power steering pump “left hand side under the alternator” and just wonder do I get a bigger belt, or do I need the twin pulley with twin belts? and help from anyone who has do this conversion would be very helpful thanks for reading my post Mike

you will need twin crank pulley .bracket to replace alternator bracket that holds pump as well ,stock 2.5 belts can be bought at any parts shop

Hi many thanks for your reply, yes I guessed I would need a twin crank pulley will any fit or do I need one that is just for the J12 engine or will a J19 or others fit on the J12?),

Also can you tell me why I need a bracket to replace the alternator bracket? and can I get a pump bracket or will I need to make one up, (looking at photos of engines that already have power steering, the power steering pump fits under the alternator I’m guessing it bolts on the engine block via the bracket you say I need that will hold the pump?

Many thanks Mike

pump bracket replaces alternator bracket as shares same fixing holes ,bracket holds both ,crank pulley depend on pump you have

No, I have not completed it yet but I have all the parts. My understanding is that there are two ways to do the conversion, Eaton and Adwest. Here are the two URLs for the parts:

https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams...ly-aspirated/power-steering-pump-adwest_53073
I am doing the Eaton conversion but I think either one will work. (Check with an expert, though.)
The part number 2, the bracket, is not easy to find at a reasonable price. I got lucky and found one in the UK (I live in California) for about 200 GBP. The other parts are available. I may start the conversion in the next few weeks, so let's stay in touch. [email protected]

Good morning. sorry for late reply
So busy I haven’t been on ma phone much.
thanks for your post.
I have started the conversion and so far very successful
I have the bracket that holds the steering pump and alternator. The alternator has to be relocated by the looks
I have all the pipe work but so far I can’t seem to find a pipe that has the correct fitting for the pump itself.
I thought I had struck lucky with a hydraulic company locally but after a 15 min wait they hadn’t got the correct fitting. I ha e to wait for them to modify.
I will keep you posted. have a good day

This is the photo of my current situation. The bracket fitted nicely. Alternator relocated. But the way the bracket fitted onto the block it doesn’t line up for the 2 nd pulley. So I am going for the longer belt. Still waiting for the hose

Are you sure it uses just one belt? I found this picture on the Internet a while ago. I have not started my conversion. A good person to ask is Mike at Britannica Restorations.

The photo doesn’t show it too well but all the pulleys are in line and I meant the 2 nd row of pulley doesn’t line up. Which prevents me from using the 2 row. Belt. All the other pulleys line up spot on. I purchased a longer belt and it runs perfect. however I am not a specialist and take advice from others.
If I need to adjust something due to too much stres on other ancillaries then I will look at it.

Do you mean the second row of the crankshaft pulley?

I bought a new crankshaft pulley that has three grooves in it. Not sure where I got the part number but it was on my list to get for the conversion.

Sorry me being a dumbo. I mean the original crankshaft pulley only has one groove. The pump pulley has two. So the alternator and the water pump and the crankshaft all line up. And I have a 2 option on the new pump. hope that makes sense

I am not an expert and have not done this conversion before, so I just took guidance from what I could find on the Internet and Mike at Britannica Restorations. I also got a new pump pulley with a single groove. I plan to use the two belt approach, if it all fits properly.
