Ok, i have a 94 300tdi 90, 79k non tweaked and my buddy has a 98 300tdi 98k non tweaked,
Mine requires driving hard and tops out around 65 his accelerates really well and keeps going into the 80s!! Should there really be such a difference between the same models?

If ya only getting 65 out of a 300tdi you either have Big tyres on it or it's fooked. I've had 90 on the clock in the 110 with 265/75/16's fitted and 95 out of my R reg disco with 235/75/16's

Previous owner of mine did have a recon gearbox put in and I don't know what from, is there a simple way to find out? Also would tyres really take almost 20mph off top speed?

Yea tried satnav, its definitely not as quick, I've recently put a new fip on hoping that was the problem but its exactly the same, doesn't smoke, starts fine, revs cleanly just not as pokey .

gearboxes are the same and even if they were different you could compare in 4th gear as all are the same then ,timing can make a difference ,the std setting by pin isnt very accurate on tdis ,as can general condition of engine and fuel system

My tyres are bfg muds 255/85/16

My Disco used to have 31" tyres on and easily topped 90+

It now has 235 85 16's on and struggles at the top end .. it will rev out eventually though ... Try different tyres .. ;)

I have a set of decent 31" AT's for sale .. ;)

Compare some stats with your mates 300tdi, compare compression test readings and run a boost gauge.

Compare length of your fuel screws, and diaphram orientation on the FIPs.

If no clues there, get your injectors tested and double check timing.

Or just enjoy the slow lane.

Thanks for all the ideas, as I said its just had a new fip and the injectors were pop tested. I think easiest next option will be a boost guage, cos everything else appears at first glance to be the same.

injectors are 2 stage and pop test doesnt show everything like it does on older injectors, id set timing ,check for air in fuel line etc first
