Just bought a second hand axle casing which is in rather good nick just a fair bit of surface rust as they do, so im thinking of having it shot blasted and powder coated but a friend of mine says this will effect the gasket i will put in for the diff and other gaskets, is this true?

you should never put a gasket against powder coatings. either mask it off, sand it off or stanley knife it away. A lot of people say you shouldn't powder coat things like axles because it just chips off but i've never seen one done so it would be interesting to see how it lasts.

Having worked in the powder coating plant many years ago, a good coater should be able to do it but you will have to make sure its spotless, all holes plugged and gasket surfaces covered.
By the way powder coating works its difficult to get in the corners nooks and crannys etc even when using two different charging systems it can be done if you get lots of practice and do similar parts all the time.

Personally I would just paint it as unless its show winning vehicle I feel its not worth the effort.

I have a few bits done for my mk2 golf think it's looks great, and is durable here are my brake calipers
