I am new to all this just bought a series 3 109 safari station wagon but it has not gone down well with the wife so it will have to go .what I need is five proper seats with seatbelts a respectable interior and some life left in it with a preference for lpg or as much engine reliability and efficient as poss over power so 2.5 petrol ideal but flexible . Is this possible for this sort of money ? I love the look of defender and series landrover but not that taken with any others .the 109 is tax free, solid cheap insurance and if I fitted lpg not bad to run but is shabby interior and will not have the cruising ability to keep the wife happy .been reading about defenders and they apear to have lots of rust problems more so than series landrovers and that is one of the things that would worry me at this price range .I am not a mechanic but like the fact that things seem at least reasonable to do on the series so it should not be that much harder on a 110 .am I barking up the wrong tree ?

A £3k Defender, eek! It'll be as cold, drafty, cramped, rusty and unreliable as any series (or even a new one :D), fer £3k your lookin at summut thats gonna need regular work.

In a word..No. If your missus aint happy you are screwed. For 3k you would not get a 110 that would make her happy...... Take her to see a Discovery.... they are half the price of a Defender and you could get a nice one for 3k. I know.... but it a compromise unless you fancy living in a 110? :)

Thanks for the reply s ,sounds like I could be stuffed then as far as landrovers go .my brother in law had a very nice discovery but I seem to remember some very hefty bills and his was a good one .I always thought ex military landrovers seem expensive or maybe I have not veen looking in the right pkaces .

300Tdi discovery is as reliable as a defender (it's mechanically very similar) 3k would buy a really nice late registred one with no 'issues' however I wouldn't be so keen on a 3k td5 disco... Just my 2 pence worth

I did at one point at the same time i did have:
a 200 tdi disco
a 300 tdi disco
a 2.0 mpi petrol disco (which although slow was lovely and quiet and smooth compared to the diesel ones)
and a range rover classic with a gmc v8 diesel conversion

So have compared all the mk1 engines bar a petrol v8!

And I now have a td5 110 double cab

depends on what you mean by decent. If you want all the mod cons and not to work on it for years.. yeah move on.

<1k for an older needing tlc fender isn't unheard of.

What didn't the missus like about the 109? Is it mean to be the primary vehicle?

As said above about the Discovery, most will have had the big bills spent on them.

Of course there is still that chance but there is with any used car.

I have a 95 3.9 V8 and a 99 TD5 Discoverys they both have there plus sides, but the previous owner of my Td5 spent a decent wedge meaning there isn't much left for me to look at, where as the V8 is a low mileage Jap import but again a very comprehensive history file with it.

ya not wrong and they're abused like fook by the thick fooking squaddies that drive em. and the days of proper money no object maintenance went out the window. 20years ago.

Struggled to find a decent defender for 5k (Think I've sorted a tidy TDI 90 will find out next week :) ) there ain't half some overpriced ****e about......... spent A ferkin fortune since Christmas traveling up and down the country to look at some half baked pieces of ****e and that's just the owners . Take your time and something will turn up, don't buy the first piece of crap you see there are some good ones about good luck your gona need it

I got my first 110 200tdi for £3250. Never had any problems with it. It was a van back, solid chassis and panels with no sign or repair. Had a nearly new set of general grabber at's on it and the best bit was a new engine from turner engineering with less than 8000 miles on the clock. Ran really well. The bloke I brought it from needed to sell it as his missus was having another baby so needed the money. The only reason I don't have it now is some theiving bas**rd stole it one night. Think it was more right time right place but they are out there.

You'll need to spend £5K on a 110 and even at that it'll start to need some work. You'll get a good Td5 Disco 2 for £3.5-4K so either save hard for a good 110 or save a little more and get a D2 Td5...

I spent £6K on my first 110 300 Tdi CSW, whilst it was good, the 2nd row doors were starting to rust, it needed a rear cross member and the suspension was sagging...
