Hi all, I have a bit of a strage problem going on with the landy that I cannot find an answer to.

First off it's a 1990 Defender 90 SWB with original 200tdi engine fitted.

The problem is that my battery light comes on when I start the car and stays on. In the past and very rarely now if I blipped the throttle it would go off. I have a voltage gauge fitted and it is constantly reading around 10 volts no matter if running or not. The battery light will occasionally go out if I give it a lot of throttlle when it is warm and then the voltage gauge jumps to 14v and all it good until the engine is turned off.

It's a weird one because I thought if the alternator was dead then it would never charge and the fact that it will go out and resume charging fine sometimes is confusing me.

Is there any way to fit a 200tdi Disco alternator on as my mate has one lying or would it be possible to swap the voltage regulators to check it's not just that at fault.

All the wires seem tight at the back of the unit as well so am ruling that out for now and all other dash lights work as they should, I don't have a rev counter so have no idea if this works. Also it is starting very well, only a couple of turns and it goes everytime.... Strange but hopefully someone can help.

Unless the belt is loose it sounds like the alternator is broken- worth also checking terminals are not burnt or corroded as well
