We have a 2003 TD4 with which we use to pull a horse trailer. The road law here (Italy) limits the total weight of tow vehicle and loaded trailer to 3500 kg . More than this requires a special B extension certificate. We found that the freelander weight (1550 1600 ) fits perfectly with a trailer weight of 600 and our horse. And we can even take two and still fit under the limit.
So far if has performed well and and dragged horse and tariler all over Italy with out problems. i have found this site to be most helpful.

Towed my c/van with it yesterday (1400kgs) and i was well pleased, the more i drive this car the more i love it, it does everything i want, and the economy is unbelievable. (sorry Mark)

Still love her though. Been driving in Sport mode this morning with steptronic, brings a smile to my face everytime. She goes like a rocket and drinks loads of petrol but you can't buy that sort of grin factor

Had my freelander for bout 3 years now td4 auto with upgrade ,drives like a dream ,best motor Ive ever owned ,was thinking of getting the v6 but with all the hg problems i changed my mind, i test drove one and yes like the Mark said its a real stonker of a motor, I have driven it off road, and its the best in its class,but the best bit is a good wash and wax [and i put a bit off Vaseline on the rear exhaust and talc on the leathers] glug glug. . . Ming

Can I just add (cos just seen this thread) that I love(d) my Freelander...

Unfortunately the headgasket going south did tarnish our relationship, and though we have been to counselling, we are finding it rough

to be honest, was supposed to have put it up for sale by now, but haven't yet...keep telling myself sell, sell, sell
then I drive it around the fields behind and think keep, keep, keep

I would say that they are a lovely vehicle to drive and if the worry wasn't there then I would be a happy man all the time!

I have to agree with the def/disco owners in regards to the poor capabilities of the Freelander, and I think all of you, Freelander owners will have to agree as well after you saw this video, entirely photoshopped as the pictures of the def/disco have all been replaced by Freelander images.
Proves you can't trust these pr-people.

Hey willo, I just saw the video, thats a good joke all right! I know I getting on but as far I can remember the rocks and sand have not changed too much in the last 50 years. You go romping through the dunes like that you better have a good tow truck to get you back. tires were all wrong too. Maybe if they took off the hood, doors , top and all excess they might do better.This old desert rat knows. Mikroll

Why would they do that?

LR does have a team of Freelanders ... and there are at least two independent Freelander competitors in the British Off Road Racing Championships. They are virtually unmodified, compared to their competition - heavily converted hybrids and racers. Check out the pictures here.

I loved the idea of a special effects company marking up a Bowler with red dots and then using CGI to transfer a Freelander image on top of it. It would cost a fortune in Hollywood fees ... When they got the bill, the Land Rover executive would thing to themselves, "You could run a off road racing team with that much..."
