Was given a ride in a 200tdi today. Head had been ported and skimmed, uprated standard fitment intercooler, timing advanced and fuel pump tweaked...nothing else.

It was the best driving Defender I have ever been in. In fact it was fantastic.

It was very quick and could accelerate hard in 4th and 5th gear from very low speed. It was a very very lively Defender and the engine sounded fantastic (standard exhaust).

Apparently it was slow and smokey like many an old TDI before this was done few weeks ago. Today there wasn't a smidgen of smoke out of it.

Has anybody else done this to theirs?

Cost the owner less than £550 for everything.

He told me Defenders timing was apparently slightly regards so he advanced it a tad.

I'm just quite interested in this as I would definitely have this done to mine as it was an insane improvement.

skimming wont add anything, fuel pump tweak would be what you noticed ,though it does help to have smooth flow of gas through ports to and from manifolds

so how does one tweak the fuel pump ?
I dont want to shorten its life, or raise consumption

If that's the difference it makes, then I am very impressed indeed. It was a fantastic driving defender. I knew it made a difference but need imagined it was such a huge improvement.

Mine was fettled with by previous owner but judging by his other work, I'm sure he made a mess of it. And it doesn't go anything like what I was in today. Some boost gauge thingy in mine too...looks like it was out of 50p shop.

i advanced my timing after fitting a hybrid turbo, pump was already tweaked, made a difference, and cut out smoke on start up

Which way advances the pump timing? Have put 35" tyres on I think it needs some more poke about it,
