Hi All,

Over the past few weeks I've needed to get my 110 jump started a number of times.

I know realise I need to get it into the garage as it's either the battery not being charged correctly - thus alternator or the battery not holding the charge or something more sinister... I turn the ignition - nothing.

She's done 120k from new (one owner - me) and is in good, healthy state.

I'd like to get a Car Starter and I have NO idea which one to purchase. I've seen some that also do 'air' - which seems like a good idea for the tyres as I do tow occasionally. Equally, I have no idea how many AMPs this starter should have.

I would appreciate your recommendations. I would prefer something portable, but quite beefy.

Many Thanks Fellow Landi owners...

This was discussed about 6 months ago, Someone was buying one of the cheapies of the bay.

May be worth doing a search and seeing what the result was if any.

But get your motor checked over ...................LOL

Cheers

Sort the battery issue, them starter things are not man enough for your engine on a cold day

It was 28 degrees !! I do intend to get it sorted. However, I also need to ensure I can start the car to get to work whilst I wait to get the landcover garage to look at the problem, seeing as I was stuck onsite tonight unable to start my car !!

You'll want something like this, with croc clips to connect to the battery.
This should start a Defender.
I wouldn't buy one that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket, as it limits the current you can put in to the battery to about 10A and can melt the socket.

Halfords sell em. There are two types, one for engine up to 2lt and the other for bigger engines. Quite a difference in price but don't be tempted to penny pinch. I'd buy the bigger one even if I only had a 1lt corsa.

I admit I was sceptical about the claims made for this device, however I am happy to say after 3 months of use it is nothing short of outstanding. The unit comes in a pack with all the cables and adaptors, the only item I needed to add was a 12v lighter socket to power some items, but this is personal choice. The pack zips up,into a neat box with cables one side and battery the other. Once the item arrived I put it on charge using the supplied transformer and it reached 100% pretty quickly, I estimate on mains power it takes less than 2 hours to fully charge from empty.
So first challenge, I needed to start a 1200cc petrol engine car which had been standing for about 8 months, and had a completely flat battery, even the locks would not work. I connected the pack up using the supplied leads ( note the 12v output is live regardless of if the unit is switched on or off) turn the key, and the engine lept into life first time. I checked the capacity on the device still 99%. Over the next couple of days I used it 5 further times to restart this car whilst we got the battery sorted, it was faultless and after a total of 6 starts still read 92% full.
Next challenge, I needed to inflate some tyres on a Landrover, 4 tyres each needing about 15psi from a little 12v compressor (hence addition of 12v socket). The pack is not designed for constant draw I don't think, but did a remarkable job, the compressor ran for about 20 mins which drained about 30% capacity and gave me confidence that I could have fully inflated 4 tyres if required which was a real bonus.
Final challenge, I went to start a Landrover Defender with a 200tdi (2.5 litre) diesel engine. These beasts need a good 600 CCA normally and this particular one hadn't been turned over for about 10 years, so I seriously doubted the pack would work, especially as I have seen these things eat old style battery packs. However I connected it up and turned the key, expecting to hear the starter struggle to turn it over. To my delight, the engine turned over as if it had a truck battery attached and fired first time.
I am delighted with the pack, a couple of mates have seen and used mine and then bought them immediately. If you own and drive vehicles buy one. I have bought them for both my kids to go with their cars.

The local motor spares place has them that go up to 3.2 litre Diesel engine, I was tempted till I say the price, £149.99. Might get one after summer.
