Landy issue

I have just done a service and replaced the oil, oil filter, air filter and fuel filter. All that might not be relevant but on starting her up all seemed fine except that I can hear a knocking / popping sound from the air intake. I've done some searching head gasket or associated seemed to come up on a regularly! This is what I've checked so far:

Defender 1995 300TDI

  • Oil - nice and clear no whitening etc
  • Exhaust - puff of black at start up then nice and clear, only slight puff when hoofing it
  • Header tank - No diesel smell and water / coolant seems clean, no white froth or bubbles - you can see water / coolant rushing into the tank when the engine is revved, I presume this is normal - no real pressure build up.
  • Temperature - sits at half way most of the time only rises to 2/3 on a steep hill if I keep the speed up - running at idle and normal temp the top heater hose is still flexible.
  • Engine - no obvious oil leak and it hardly uses any oil, the only obvious leak is a small amount from rocker cover gasket (on my to do list)

Would appreciate any thoughts or other tests I could try. It had a new Turner engine in 2010 and has only done 14,000 miles so I'm hoping it's not the dreaded HG failure.

Cheers

Sounds like yer run over an angry dwarf with a hammer. Park it in a river and drown the little feker.

Slide your hand behind cylinder head nearest bulkhead!! with engine running !! If you feel pulses of escaping air then head gasket ! Shine a torch around manifold area and look for puffs of smoke !!!had a 300 tdi at work today exact same problem ! Was head gasket!!!

Cheers for that, no obvious sign of any puffs of smoke from manifold area but will also check at the back of the block.

I have just put the old air filter back in and the noise has gone almost completely  put the new one back in and same noise again! Is one model / brand of air filter likely to do this? The new air filter is a Mahle one, the one I took out looks more open.
